Year 2 News

We are excited to share what our Year 2 students have been learning in numeracy this week! Our focus has been on ordering numbers in ascending and descending order—an essential skill that helps build a strong foundation in number sense and mathematical reasoning.

Learning Intention:

We are learning to place numbers in ascending and descending order.

Success Criteria:

I will be successful when I can:

- Place three numbers in ascending order from smallest to largest.

- Place three numbers in descending order from largest to smallest.

How We Are Learning

To make learning engaging and interactive, students participated in a fun and hands-on game called Roll the Dice

Here’s how we played:

  1. Roll the Dice – Each student rolled three dice.
  2. Write the Numbers – They recorded the three numbers on the board.
  3. Roll Again – Students rolled all three dice again.
  4. Write the New Numbers – They recorded the second set of numbers.
  5. Order the Numbers – They arranged the numbers from smallest to largest (ascending order) and from largest to smallest (descending order).
  6. Check and Compare – Students reviewed their work to ensure accuracy.

Linking to the Victorian Curriculum

This learning activity aligns with the Victorian Curriculum (VCMNA089), which focuses on comparing and ordering numbers up to at least 100. Through this activity, students developed their ability to recognise numerical order and build confidence in working with numbers in a playful and supportive environment.

Supporting Numeracy at Home

You can help reinforce this learning at home by:

  • Rolling dice and asking your child to arrange the numbers in ascending and descending order.
  • Using everyday objects like coins, buttons, or playing cards to compare and order numbers.
  • Encouraging discussions about numbers in daily activities, such as looking at house numbers or comparing prices while shopping.

We appreciate your support in your child’s numeracy learning journey. If you have any questions or would like further ideas for home activities, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Happy Learning!
