2025 WADL Schools Debating Competition Kicks Off with Wins!

The 2025 season of the WADL Schools Debating Competition kicked off its first fixture with impressive performances from both the Novice and Junior Teams, who won their debates on Tuesday night.

The Trinity College Novice Team, comprising LJ O'Callaghan (7.4), Hasan Mirza (8.7), and Leo Pileggi (8.4), took on the affirmative side against Scotch College, who debated in the negative. The topic for their debate was: This house prefers online learning to in-person learning. Both teams presented compelling arguments, making for a highly engaging and thought-provoking debate. It was a particularly special occasion for LJ O'Callaghan and Hasan Mirza, as it marked their first time debating for Trinity College. Despite being newcomers, they spoke very confidently, demonstrated excellent teamwork and presented some very thoughtful arguments, making a strong case for their position.

The Junior Team also delivered a stellar performance. The team comprised Fred Brockett (9.1), an up-and-coming newcomer, and seasoned debaters Matteo Redolatti (9.3) and Spencer Hathrill (9.2). They were also ably supported by reserve team member Lucas Hall (9.4). Debating against Shenton College in the affirmative, their topic was: This house would give teachers bonuses for increased student performance. The Junior Team's well-reasoned arguments and assertive delivery earned them a well-deserved victory in this round.

As the season progresses, both teams will undoubtedly continue to refine their skills and build on this promising start, and we are excited to see how the 2025 Schools Debating Competition unfolds.

John Van Beek ('23) in Australian Idol Top 10

While John has made it to the Top 10, his journey isn't over yet. To advance to the finals, he still needs our ongoing support through voting after each weekend's performance. Currently, performances are scheduled for Sunday/Monday, with voting open for 24 hours starting at 4pm on the day of his performance. Stay updated on his progress and voting times through our social media channels or by directly following the Australian Idol instagram page (@australianidol). Maintenance Works

The College has and is undertaking a number of projects to improve the College’s facilities.  These include:

  • Refurbishment of the ground floor B Block classrooms - the five classrooms (including one which was made into two smaller classrooms, so now six classrooms) are completely refurbished.  This includes new smart screen technology, cassette type air conditioning, flooring, ceilings, paintwork, cabinetry and the addition of two glass walled mini meeting rooms to enable additional break out areas and for ‘make up’ assessments.  The College is very happy with the outcome of the project.  The work of the builders, AWB, and architects, TRCB, is appreciated, particularly given the tight timeframes.

  • Paving outside B Block – the paving next to the lockers was replaced, making it considerably safer when wet

  • Pool relining – the Trinity pool, arguably the best pool in the PSA, now looks even better.  The pool’s vinyl liner, tiling, gutters and lane markings were completely replaced.

  • The Virtual Reality room, next to the Senior School Library, was fully sound proofed

  • D&T air-conditioning – the Design & Technology workshops and saw room were fully airconditioned.

  • Waterbank – the Waterbank area, between the College and the Causeway, has been like a moonscape for the last seven years.  2024 saw Trinity Ave reinstated and the Waterbank area graded flat.  It is expected that the area will have turf rolled out over the next few months.  This will be used by the College from Term 3 for Phys Ed classes and PSA sport training, reducing bus trips to Waterford and enabling longer training sessions.

  • New tractor – everybody likes a tractor!  For those interested, it is a Kubota LH5740 and has the following features:

    • 4cyl diesel engine, 57HP

    • Hydrostatic transmission response control

    • State of the art PTO & hydraulic systems

    • 4-Wheel drive

    • Power steering

    • High back reclining seat with swivel and shock absorbers

    • Enclosed cabin with A/C & low noise infiltration

    • Front loader attachment
