News from Four/Five

What a busy two weeks we have had in 4/5!

NAPLAN

This week Grade 5 students completed NAPLAN testing. The students demonstrated great focus and resilience completing reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy tests. Well done on your fantastic efforts, Year 5!

Welcome Mrs Pardon

This week, we welcome Mrs Nicole Pardon to our classroom. Nicole is visiting from Swinburne University for the next few weeks. We are all looking forward to having her share her knowledge and practice her teaching with our class.

Lent

Last week marked the beginning of Lent. On Shrove Tuesday, students enjoyed the tradition of eating pancakes.

The following day, 4/5 B once again demonstrated excellent reverence in the whole school Ash Wednesday Mass to mark the beginning of Lent. In class, we have explored Almsgiving, one of the three pillars of Lent, which entails giving to those in need through acts of kindness, generosity, and service. Students wrote some Lenten promises of some acts of almsgiving they could do during Lent, presenting these on paper chains.

Literacy

We have continued to read our class novel "Leo and Ralph", and have begun to write our own narrative (story) innovating on the characters and setting of this novel.

Mathematics

Over the last two weeks, students have expanded their knowledge of fractions. They have counted in halves, quarters, thirds and tenths, placed these fractions on a number line. They have also converted mixed numerals to improper fractions, and vice versa.

Next week, students will continue to consolidate and develop their knowledge of multiplication and division. A reminder to parents, to please assist their children to continue to practice their multiplication facts (times tables) at home. It has been great to see improved fluency with so many students this year, and we hope to see this continue.
