Eco Kids Term 2 Report

The 202Peakhurst Public School Eco Kids group under the leadership of Ms McLennan and Ms Zanetti, have a range of initiatives planned for the 2025 school year. This year we will be focusing on the large amount of plastic pollution around the school. We will be assigning classes specific areas of the school to maintain, where plastic waste will be collected and binned. This will foster a sense of responsibility and educate students on the importance of environmental responsibility and the impact plastic waste has on our local environments, water ways and animals. This initiative will continue for the rest of the year and aligns to the World Environment Day theme on June the 5th, which encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment impacted by plastic.

The Eco Kids will continue to meet regularly at 3.00 pm on Tuesdays with Ms McLennan and Ms Zanetti. This will help maintain momentum and engagement among students. In weeks two and three, the Eco Kids group were shown where compost tumbler bins were located around the school, how they work and how to empty food waste from their classroom waste bins responsibly into the tumblers. Ms McLennan is in the process of auditing classroom food waste bins to ensure every class has a bin. The next step is to decide how and where the compost will be used.

The Peakhurst Public School Eco Kids initiative is a great way to engage students in environmental stewardship and gardening. Recently we received donated vegetable seedlings from Bunnings. In week four, Ms McLennan and Ms Zanetti involved the Eco Kids students in a hands-on demonstration and planting activity that not only helped beautify the school but also taught them about sustainability and the importance of including vegetables in our diets. We were very impressed by the high level of engagement of the students.

Trash Free Tuesday's continue this term. Class teachers are looking for student lunch boxes in their classes without packaging. Tokens will be given to those students, and go into a draw at assemblies. The winners will receive a canteen voucher. Keep up the great work families!

In Term 4 last year, the 2024 Eco Kids helped plant and water a range of native seedlings and trees around the school. We are proud to report that most of them have survived and are thriving, especially with the help of all the rain we have had recently.

Lastly, we would like to acknowledge Mr Archie for his essential contributions to Eco Kids initiatives and the continued upkeep of the school eco systems and gardens. Thank you.
