Year Ten Dare to Dream Week and Personal Development Day

As part of the year Ten’s journey to VCE, we spent a week on careers, called Dare to Dream. In workshops, guest speakers taught us about different career pathways, and we visited a university or TAFE of our choosing.

One of the guest speakers that we heard from on the first day was Tyson Day who taught the year Ten’s about his career pathway to being an owner of his company and going through challenging times. Tyson also taught us about the Morrisby test we would take later in the day.  The results of the test were interesting; some students were curious about their results, while others felt as if it matched them perfectly.

On Wednesday, the second day of Dare to Dream, the year Ten’s went to a university or TAFE. We had four options to choose from, RMIT, ACU, Swinburne, and Homesglen.  Each venue offered different opportunities to learn about courses and got us thinking about what we might like to do in the future.  Highlights included access to an Early Childcare Program, cooking and hospitality, learning about  law, astroscience to name a few.

Thursday presented us with the opportunity to attend a number of workshops with key presenters which included business and finance, construction, medicine, paramedics, digital media, engineering, the wellness industry and VET animal studies. The year 10s also had comedian Diana Nguyen. Co-owner of Phi and Me come in to inspire the year 10s.

Our week culminated in our Personal Development day. We heard from an amazing guest presenter Katrina Gurciullio from Being Human - people, perspective and power.  She spoke about the choices we make, developing a growth mindset, listening to your gut instincts, help seeking, overcoming adversity and choosing our response. We had fun dancing in our ‘joy of movement’ session, enjoyed a shared pizza lunch, started our time capsule letters and symbols designs and listened to the Police Bagpipe band.

Overall it was an amazing week!

Year Ten Textiles

Our Year Ten Textile students have kicked off the year with a creative bang, exploring the Double Diamond design approach to craft their own unique garments. By selecting an Australian designer, students are investigating the signature characteristics that define each designer's style.

The journey began with in-depth research, followed by the generation of individual designs, allowing students to develop their vision. To bring their ideas to life, they’ve also extended their sewing skills by creating 1/4 scale corsets. These miniature garments serve as valuable prototypes, offering a 3D view of their designs and giving students the opportunity to make adjustments, ensuring their final creations align with the chosen designer’s aesthetic.

It’s been an inspiring start to the year, and we can’t wait to see how these creative concepts continue to evolve!

Year Eleven and Twelve Vocational Major

On the 21st of February, the Year 11 and 12 VM students took an educational trip to Parliament House, Treasury Gardens, and Hosier Lane. Each student could travel independently by train to the city or take the train with the teachers.

During the visit to the Parliament House, the architecture of the building was fascinating and beautiful, with intricate gold carvings on the ceilings. With a small significant detail of acorns, with a symbolic meaning of potential. We learnt about the function of the two houses of representatives. We learned that the upper house, known as the Legislative Council, consists of five elected members of parliament per region. In contrast, the lower house, the Legislative Assembly, has 88 elected members, each representing a different district or suburb. One of the most intriguing facts we learned was about the stolen golden mace. This ceremonial object was taken years ago, and to this day, there is a $50,000 reward for its return. This piqued our interest during our visit. We also discussed the importance of being active citizens and the significance of voting in shaping our government.

Following our visit to Parliament House, we explored Treasury Gardens, the state’s oldest public gardens, creating a calm and peaceful environment in the heart of the city. It is also a place where many people would have their weddings around the Old Treasury Building or the Parliament House. We saw how beautiful the garden was with its very tall trees, spectacular water fountains and lakes. We even saw nine baby ducklings swimming in the pond with other ducks, which was fascinating to see.

The excursion also connected with our PDS studies, where we focused on social awareness, diversity, and stereotypes. Additionally, our learning in Year 11 VM Numeracy was reinforced through the study of signs and measurements. Our final stop was Hosier Lane, a famous Melbourne laneway renowned for its vibrant street art. As we walked through, we saw an array of artworks created by both international and local artists. Many of these pieces represented social and political issues, pop culture references, and personal experiences.

Hosier Lane is named after Robert Hosier, a local businessman, and has become a hub for artistic expression. It is not only a tourist attraction but also a popular location for photo shoots, music videos, and TV shows.  Some artwork even had references to Valentine’s Day, reflecting the time of our visit.

We sincerely thank the VCE VM team for providing us with this wonderful opportunity for this excursion, even though it was a small period of time, and we hope to have another excursion very soon in the future.
