Celebrating Zero Discrimination Day
On March 1st, we celebrated Zero Discrimination Day, a special day that reminded us how important it is to treat everyone with kindness, respect, and fairness, no matter our differences. It was a great opportunity to reflect on how we can make our school and community a more welcoming and inclusive place for everyone.
I also had the chance to teach our Year 1 students about Zero Discrimination Day, and they were so eager to share ways they could be kind and respectful to everyone. Students across the school quickly connected this day to our core values of Respect, Resilience, and Responsibility. We talked about how:
1. Respect means valuing everyone’s differences and treating each other kindly.
2. Resilience helps us stay strong and support others, even when things are challenging.
3. Responsibility encourages us to stand up for what’s right and make sure everyone feels included.
Students were really excited to learn that some famous celebrities also support Zero Discrimination Day and who stand up for important causes! Some of these include;
- Taylor Swift who promotes kindness and equality for everyone.
- Lionel Messi supports inclusion in sports and education.
- Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson encourages hard work, kindness, and making sure everyone feels included.
- Emma Watson who advocates for equal rights for everyone.
PBL Behaviour Management Flowchart
At St. Mary’s, we use a clear and supportive approach to help students meet behaviour expectations. Our Behaviour Management Flowchart follows 5 simple steps to guide students in making positive choices:
- Remind – A friendly reminder to help students stay on track with expected behaviour.
- Restate – Positively reinforcing expectations to support understanding.
- Reset – Encouraging a fresh start and an opportunity to try again.
- Refer – Providing additional support from leadership when needed.
- Reteach – Guiding and modelling the expected behaviour for success.
We encourage you to sit down with your child and go through this flowchart together. By discussing these steps at home, you can help reinforce our school wide approach to behaviour, ensuring your child feels supported in making positive choices.
Thank you for working with us to foster respectful and responsible behaviour at school!
Student Wellbeing Tip of the Month
The Power of Brain Breaks!
Taking short Brain Breaks throughout the day can help boost focus, reduce stress, and improve learning! We lvoe Brain Breaks here at St Mary's. When you start feeling tired or overwhelmed, we try one of these quick activities:
Stretch It Out – We Stand up, reach for the sky, then touch your toes!
Deep Breaths – Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4, and breathe out for 4
Shake It Off – Dance to your favourite song for 30 seconds!
Go for a Walk – A quick walk outside can refresh your mind.
You could try some of these at home too! Pick one Brain Break to do as a family and notice how you feel afterward. A little movement and mindfulness can make a big difference! 😊
