Welcome back to Term 2. Wow, the last two weeks have flown by! This is always an extremely busy term for the class area, and we don't expect the pace to slow down anytime soon.
This week in class, some Year 10 students have completed the literacy components of their first round of the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA). This will conclude next week when the Numeracy component is undertaken. Year 11 students missed a class day due to a timetable change, and Year 12 students have been busy preparing for their Externally Set Tasks, which are fast approaching.
Term 2 is an important period, with numerous College activities scheduled and a significant amount of learning and assessment throughout. Students are encouraged to stay organised and make the most of both class and Prep time to maximise learning opportunities and ensure they are well prepared for assessments, while also managing their other commitments.
Year 12 Externally Set Tasks (EST’s)
As a requirement of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), all students studying Year 12 General courses are required to sit a state‑wide Externally Set Task (EST), which is worth 15% of the overall grade in each General subject they undertake. The ESTs are written and prepared by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). While teachers are aware of the content that may be assessed, they do not see the actual EST paper until after students have completed it.
Externally Set Tasks are designed to:
Help ensure fair assessment of student achievement in Year 12 General courses.
Act as a moderation tool to help ensure teachers have an accurate understanding of the course standards.
Model best assessment practice.
EST Schedule
Monday 11th May – Period 3 and 4 (Animal Production Systems).
Wednesday 13th May – Period 1 and 2 (English).
Monday 18th May – Period 1 and 2 (Plant Production Systems).
Wednesday 20th May – Period 3 and 4 (Mathematics Essentials).
Please note: All students within the school must sit the same EST at the same time. Please avoid scheduling appointments on these class days.
Students will continue to prepare for their ESTs by revising previously taught content in the lead‑up to their assessments. As with all assessments, it is critical that students take these tests seriously and do their best. Students should ensure they are confident with the content that may be covered in each subject’s EST and seek additional assistance from staff if they are unsure about any concepts.
If parents have any questions about the EST assessments, please feel free to contact the classroom teacher for subject‑specific queries, or myself for general enquiries.
