Year Five/Six News

Term One in Review!

What a busy term we have had so far across Year 5/6!

In Reading, we have been diving into the novel Blueback, which tells the story of a boy named Abel and his mother Dora Jackson, and their strong connection to the sea. This text has supported rich discussions around character, setting, and themes of sustainability and belonging.

In Writing, students have produced both a narrative filled with figurative language and a persuasive piece focused on current sustainability issues. They have been developing their ability to express ideas clearly, while considering how to engage and persuade their audience. This week, we are exploring poetry with an ANZAC theme, focusing on language that creates imagery and emotion.

In Mathematics, we have been working on number, fractions, and statistics. Students particularly enjoyed creating line graphs using their heart rate (beats per minute) during different exercise tasks, allowing them to connect data collection with real-world contexts and visual representation.

In Humanities, our focus has been on sustainability. We were fortunate to have a Ballarat City Planner speak to the class about the process of building locally and the rules and considerations involved in sustainable development. This provided valuable insight into real-world applications of the concepts we are learning. This week, we are also exploring ANZAC history and learning the song I Was Only 19 in preparation for performing at this year’s ANZAC ceremony. Students have been reflecting on the significance of the occasion and the stories behind it.

In Respectful Relationships, we have been focusing on emotional literacy and personal strengths. Students have researched Human Rights Activists and discussed the qualities and contributions of individuals such as Nedd Brockmann and Adam Goodes, considering the impact of their work in the community.

Overall, it has been a productive and engaging term, with students demonstrating enthusiasm across all areas of learning. We look forward to building on this momentum next term and celebrating the continued growth and achievements of our students.
