Potato Olympics: A Fun and Creative Learning Experience
This term, our students participated in the Potato Olympics, an exciting and unique event that was all about creativity and teamwork! Unlike traditional Olympic Games, these games featured potato athletes, which the students designed and decorated using textas, straws, felt, pipe cleaners, and small sticks. Each student chose a sport for their potato athlete and worked hard to bring their designs to life. The students even created flags for their athletes, representing different countries.
When the day of the Olympics arrived, there was excitement in the air! The students gathered in their country teams and proudly marched their potato athletes around the courtyard to the sound of the national anthem. The games included various fun and challenging events such as hockey, over and under, shuttle runs, balancing the potato on their heads, and potato stacking. It was a fantastic way for the students to build their teamwork and problem-solving skills while having lots of fun.
Exploring Animal Habitats
In addition to the Potato Olympics, our students have been busy learning about animals and their habitats. They researched different environments, including deserts, rainforests, gardens, oceans, Antarctica, and grasslands, and then chose an animal that lives in each habitat. The students discovered fascinating facts about their chosen animals, from how they look to how they grow and change.
To bring their learning to life, the students built detailed habitats out of shoeboxes, using various materials to accurately represent the environments where their animals would live. This hands-on project was a wonderful opportunity for them to apply their research and creativity.
Amazing Animal Incursion
This term, we also had an exciting incursion where the students learned about some incredible animals up close. They were thrilled to see and learn about snakes, which, while a bit scary, are vital for controlling pests. The students were amazed by crocodiles and their powerful jaws, and they learned that these reptiles can stay underwater for a long time.
The tawny frogmouth, a bird that can blend in with tree branches, was a favorite for its impressive camouflage. The students were also captivated by the sugar gliders, adorable marsupials that can glide from tree to tree like little flying squirrels. The lizards were another highlight, with the students getting to hold a blue-tongued lizard and a frilled-neck lizard, learning that some lizards can even lose their tails to escape danger.
Lastly, the students had the chance to see real stick insects. These fascinating creatures, which look just like twigs or branches, amazed the students with their incredible camouflage abilities. Though a little bit creepy, the stick insects were a big hit and provided a memorable learning experience.
