Year 3

Hello from 3H

Welcome to Term 3 with 3H! What a wonderful start we have had. The students have been working hard in their reading groups to achieve their reading goals and have enjoyed the chance to watch the Olympics in class, cheering on the Australian teams. We have been making predictions on what will happen, keeping a medal tally and yes, even competing in some classroom Olympic activities.

In Literacy, students have been investigating a range on fiction and non-fiction texts involving persuasive language and devices. We have looked at the importance of emotive and powerful language to encourage a reader to side with the authors given opinion. This was then tied into our writing over the weeks. Students have then applied learned devices to create a powerful persuasive piece. As we know children are the greatest persuaders of all time and here in 3H we even got a success story or two with a student writing a detailed persuasive piece for their parents, successfully persuading them to get a gold fish at home! Well done 3H persuasion team!

In Mathematics, students have been exposed to a wide range of Area and Capacity tasks in the classroom. Students have been exploring the method of Length x Width and Length x Width x Height. They have played a range of games such as ‘Get Out of My House’ and “Who Holds the Most” to improve their understanding of the concepts. They have really enjoyed experimenting with different shapes and found it interesting to note that just because a shape appears to be the biggest, doesn’t mean it has the biggest capacity. Students also had the chance to celebrate the Olympics in maths, taking on some Olympic math challenges such as Straw Javelin, and hypothesis Cross Country. What a few weeks we have had in 3H! And now after exploring all forms of measurement, we have moved into the exploration of shapes and their features.

As if this wasn’t enough excitement, we have had the time of our lives researching endangered animals and how we can protect species moving into the future. Students have started their in-class project where they will combine 2 researched animals to create a super animal with lifesaving adaptations! We have had Grandparents Day, having the privilege of so many 3H family Grandparents joining us in our learning space for some amazing activities, as if that wasn’t amazing enough, we then saw all the hard work students and families went to creating amazing Book Week Costumes. Finally, one final piece of excitement this term was our STEM Day, where students participated in 3 different STEM activities including budgeting and making a shelter, navigation and mapping and finally chemistry. What a blast this term has been in 3H!
