ENGLISH
YEAR 10
In Year 10 English we have been working on a theme study of “Survival”, studying relevant texts and writing in different forms and styles.
Below are three poems by one of the year 10 students, written for this unit of work.
FORGOTTEN, LOST, AND DECAYING
Poem One
In the darkest hours, when hope seems lost
Survival becomes a needy cost
Through trials we tread, with burning fire deep inside
Like a mighty beast, you fight and flee
Adapting to a world that’s wild and free
A survivor’s instinct, pulsing through veins
Venturing with determination, breaking the chains
In amongst despair, we find strength again
For survival is the product we all desire
With grit and strength we construct our path
Blind traveling through strife unaware of the obstacles to overcome
Rebuilding and renovating the remains of clash
Piecing together left over rubble, like a puzzle
Never again will we fumble in the face of strife as we now know we are more than capable
Of overpowering adversity and conquering survival
Poem Two
The fruit, once vibrant and shiny
Now rotting, withered, and forgotten
Their beauty lost, their flavour gone
No longer a sweet and tasty delight
The sweet aroma, now a foul stench
Attracts flies and maggots, full of filth
Full of sweet juice, now swampy and wet
A field day for insects, an awful sight for the rest of us
We shall cherish the fruit in its prime
And honour its beauty, before it’s gone
In its rotting stage, we see the fact
That all things must gather time and lose their youth
Poem Three
Craving, every minute, every hour
It won’t leave no matter how hard I tell it to find another soul to devour
As soon as I wake, it calls me, nagging me to give in
Although I am full of regret, I cannot not stop what I have begun
The taste that my tongue is longing for
The thing that makes my hand shake
What I start and end my day with
Withdrawal out of reach, uncontrollable
Till death due us part, my other half
