Kitchen Garden
It's fantastic to see the collaborative effort from students in the garden. The Year 6 students joined the Preps and helped them plant the new produce. This collaboration not only fosters a sense of community within the school, but also imparts valuable knowledge and skills to younger students.
Volunteers urgently needed
In order to sustain the garden's growth and development, especially during the upcoming school holidays, the support of volunteers remains crucial. To ensure the garden continues to thrive, care of the garden during the holidays will be necessary. If you are willing to volunteer, please watch out for the sign up sheet in the next whole school newsletter. You will be able to sign up for specific days to water and care for the garden. Your involvement will be greatly appreciated and will make a real difference to the success of our kitchen garden for the start of 2024.
Sustainable Christmas Tips
Christmas is a wonderful time to spend time with family and friends. But it often includes lavish meals and gifts, with the potential for wasted food, unwanted presents, and a great deal of unnecessary packaging. Here are some tips to help make this festive season a sustainable season.
- Use a living Christmas tree. Every plastic Christmas tree will eventually end up in landfill but living Christmas trees are 100% biodegradable and easily recycled.
- Minimise waste by buying sustainable gifts such as donations and experiences, or gifts made from recycled materials.
- Reduce food waste, make a list before you leave home of only the things you really need, and send your guests home with leftovers.
- Minimise plastic and packaging. Avoid disposable plates, cups, cutlery, and straws, use tap water and recycle what you can.
- Shop locally to minimise your carbon footprint associated with transport.
Scarecrow design winner
Congratulations to Lucy M (3/4G) who was the winner of our Scarecrow Competition. She designed a beautiful scarecrow with amazing labels. We look forward to making this over the remainder of the term and seeing it in our garden.
National Recycling Week
National Recycling Week, established by Planet Ark in 1996, is held every year during November. This year it is November 13-19.
Reminders of what should not be put in our recycling bins.
- Soft plastics, especially things such as snack packets. Any plastic item that is scrunchable should not be put in a recycle bin-it should go in a general waste bin.
- Any food packaging item that is contaminated with food or liquid. All liquids should be emptied and all items should be shaken out or rinsed to be as clean as possible. If there is any food still stuck to it, such as inside the top lid of a pizza box, or in a jar, or in a soft spread peel open sachet, then that should not go in the recycling. " If in doubt, leave it out".
Please take responsibility and take everything you bring to school home with you!
We will be conducting activities during lunch on Thursday November 16 to increase awareness of recycling and this initiative.
