City creation by Joy Churnov

Oh, the Humanities! (Faculty)

We’ve managed to pack a lot into a short term here at Southern Christian College and the Humanities Faculty has been no different. In Grades 9 and 10 English and SOSE the term has been dominated by preparation for exams. For our English exams there was a focus on Shakespeare. The Grade 9s unpacked the bard’s take on the teen romance genre in Romeo and Juliet, while the Grade 10s delved into the darker side of humanity in Macbeth. Both year groups learnt the fine points of essay writing in order to effectively communicate their insights and interpretations of these classic works of literature. For the SOSE exams, students demonstrated their knowledge of biomes, food security, interconnectedness, and the global environmental movement. The exams weren’t only about students’ knowledge and understanding, but also the ability to sit through the specific exam conditions. On this front, the students did an amazing job and are well prepared for their future examinations.

In the lower grades, Grade 8 SOSE has been looking at urbanisation, with a focus on Jakarta as our closed megacity. While in English the Grade 8s studied Brian Selznick’s Hugo. Our Grade 7s have been busy creating poems on Anne Frank and determining how to make cities run more sustainably. Some examples of there work can be seen below.
