Weekly Update - Thrive Framework

Secondary Framework

This will be the final section, unpacking the Secondary Thrive Framework for 2023. Last week, I outlined some of the background to how this part of the Framework in particular developed. One of the main ideas was that it is a list of dispositions that we want to foster within our students, for their personal benefit and for the benefit of the wider community.

This week, I will give some examples of how they may be applied next year, as we put the Framework into practise. Firstly, the dispositions will represent a common language we can all use as a school community to talk about the characteristics that underpin learning and relationships. This will build on the way we have focused on the core values throughout 2023. As we all become more familiar with the language, teachers will be able to provide feedback to students when they see the dispositions in action and will encourage them to reflect on how they have used them in different situations.

Secondly, they will form part of the learning goals in class. Lessons or assessments can be designed that require students to be collaborative or empathetic or discerning. Marking criteria may incorporate observations of students as initiators or listeners.

In situations where students have been encouraged to focus on the IB Learner Profile, this will be replaced by the new dispositions. As part of QUEST (Year 9) or Personal Project (Year 10), students have used the Learner Profile to set goals for their personal development. From 2024, the Thrive Framework will be the focus instead. This will mean using some dispositions that are much more specific to our Christian school context.
