Jacob Miller (5A) has recently returned from competing at the School Sport Australia track and field championships in Launceston, Tasmania. Jacob is committed to his athletics and over the past 3 years he has broken numerous discus and javelin records at the Brighton little athletics club. After finishing second at the Little Athletics State Championships for discus in 2023, he set his sights on qualifying to represent Brighton Primary school and Victoria at the National championships this year. To qualify, Jacob was required to meet the minimum qualifying standard prior to being nominated to compete at the state team selection trials.
Jacob attended the selection trials in September this year against a strong group of throwers. The trials for Jacob were a success and he was selected to represent Victoria for both 10 year old boys discus and shotput. Since then, Jacob has continued his training and attended half day training sessions with the Victorian squad in preparation for the national competition in Tasmania.
On the 22nd of November, Jacob flew with his family to Launceston to compete. He arrived at the track on Thursday morning to meet with the team and complete a short training session where he threw beautifully. Although Jacob felt a little flat with his performance in the discus (finishing 10th), his luck changed with a huge 82cm personal best in his shotput, finishing 11th overall. Jacob enjoyed the long weekend supporting his team. He was able to meet and exchange pins with athletes from across the country and developed new friendships with fellow Victorian boys.
Jacob now has his sights set on 2024!
Well done Jacob on your tremendous achievements.
