The Good The Bad and The Hardy

Last weekend, Year Eleven student Hardy Croucher performed his first solo comedy stand-up show to a sellout crowd. Two-time state finalist for Melbourne Comedy Festival’s “Class Clowns” Hardy is no stranger to the comedy circuit, regularly performing in Perth and providing a warm-up act for comedians visiting Albany. Saturday night saw his first full-length solo show at Spectrum Theatre and the atmosphere was electric. Defying his years, Hardy brings a maturity and confidence to the stage that instantly wins you over, and then his mix of physical, absurdist, and clever jokes had the audience in hysterics. This show took place immediately after Hardy finished a month-long run of performances as Eugene in Albany Light Opera and Theatre Company’s sellout production of Grease. An impressive stage presence, Hardy is someone to watch out for.

Congratulations to the Cowboy of Comedy!

The Mockingbirds

Tian Bray (Year Nine):

On Wednesday of Week Seven, the Senior Vocal Ensemble went to an incursion with The Mockingbirds. The acapella singing group visited us from Perth where they attend St George’s College. Among them, there were two former students from GSG, Bella Fasolo (2020) and Louella Marshall from 2021.

After introductions were completed, we listened to them perform for us. Their repertoire included acapella renditions of several songs including Material Girl by Madonna and Super Trouper by ABBA. All of us were deeply impressed by their beautiful harmonious sound, as well as the power and strength of their voices.

After hearing them perform, we were split into four groups and were mentored by the singers from each section. In these small groups, we quickly learnt the individual parts to Super Trouper, while getting to know the singers better as well. Soon, we all joined together again to sing Super Trouper one last time with all the parts combined.

Our choir then sung Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley for The Mockingbirds, and they joined in too at Mr Fowler’s request.

Finishing off with a performance from The Mockingbirds of a song from the movie Pitch Perfect ended with a question-and-answer session. We learnt about their lives at university, and opportunities for music outside of school. We are all grateful for this experience to learn and expand our knowledge as musicians and enjoyed this chance to sing alongside experienced performers.

Congratulations to all the musicians who performed in last week’s Music Review and at the Orientation Day. Talented Years Eight, Nine and Ten students performed a range of songs for a large audience.

We were wowed by renditions of many classic hits, including the Eagles’s Hotel California, Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up, Bon Jovi’s You Give Love A Bad Name and the finale, Crowded House’s Fall At Your Feet.

Many thanks to all the Music staff who worked so hard with the students.
