A Snapshot into Spelling

Learning Intention: To look carefully at words and identify what is similar in how they look and how they sound.

Learning Experience

Whole:

Over the last few weeks the Preps have been focusing on the long vowel sounds in spelling. This week, as a class we explored the long o vowel patterns o_e, oa, ow. To begin, each student had their own mini whiteboard to create sound boxes and segment/identify the sounds in words. We explored words like boat, goat, home, stone, slow, crow.  Students had a go breaking the word into sounds and identifying the correct letter for that sound. Then as a class we verbalised the sounds then blended them to identify the whole word.

Small:

To follow the students consolidated their understanding in their phonics spelling book through various activities. They explored long o words in a sentence, identifying the sounds, identifying objects in their environment with the long o sound, and segmenting and blending long o words.

Student Examples:

In this learning experience, students are working towards:

  • Identifying all sounds in words
  • Identifying the long vowel sound
  • Identifying the long vowel pattern

What you can do now to continue the learning at home from this experience:

  • When reading books or words in our environment identify if the vowel sound is short or long
  • Identify what letter pattern is making the long vowel sound
  • Discuss other long vowel sounds your child can hear in words
  • Practise segmenting words in their sounds e.g. home 4 letters - 3 sounds /h/ /ō/ /m/
