Student Activities

Fitzroy Careers Expo

On the 8th of February, PRC students attended the Creative Careers Expo in Fitzroy. Some of the different job exhibits on display included animation, fashion, graphic design, hair and beauty, tattooing and more. There were interactive activities scattered around, where students were able to receive free haircuts, practice tattoo designs on fruit and tagging and illustrating on canvases using special markers. It was a positive experience for students to be able to visualise jobs with a greater focus on creativity and the arts compared to a normal jobs fair.

Band Practice

Each Monday afternoon, a number of students undertake band practice, playing a number of different instruments, including guitar, bass and drums. Lately the band has been focusing on writing an original song. Anna brought in an original chord progression she created on the guitar. Neve has contributed drums that fit perfectly, whilst Eric has done a fantastic job playing the bass with others for the first time. I've been very impressed in how diplomatic the students are playing together and encouraging each other to do their best.

Student Ambassador Day

I, Kim Gray, had the opportunity to attend the first Student Ambassador Workshop for Term 1 2024 to observe our students in action. What a fantastic first day of collaboration. I look forward to seeing the work unfold throughout the year.

Student Ambassadors meet twice a term at the Whittlesea Tech School to participate in STEAM-based activities and projects. They work with the Tech School staff, community and industry partners to build student agency and develop technical and enterprise skills necessary for success in the future workforce. In 2024 students will work together to develop an interactive STEAM exhibition with a sustainability focus. This year, Whittlesea Tech has partnered with Skunk Control , globally renowned for their breath-taking STEAM installations. Student Ambassadors will have the opportunity to develop their own interactive STEAM exhibition piece, inspired by local flora and fauna. With the support of Skunk Control and the Tech School, students will learn about a range of technologies whilst developing their leadership and collaboration skills.

Gym

As part of the VCE-VM and VPC Personal Development curriculum we take our students to the gym at Mill Park Leisure Centre every Monday afternoon. The gym has been a successful program that has been running since last year, it has shown consistent participation from our students. Taking our students to the gym provides an opportunity for them to step outside of the classroom and partake in physical activity using treadmills, gym machines and free weights.

The physical nature of the gym has shown to help our students regulate their emotions and learn about the importance of having a healthy lifestyle and the many benefits of exercising.

This compliments the outcomes related to personal health and community.

Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy role playing game that compliments all the subjects of VCE-VM and VPC. This activity was introduced last year as an extracurricular activity and has provided a space for students to role play as characters of their own design and act out scenarios in fantasy worlds. Dungeons and Dragons has brought together a number of students working collaboratively which has led to strong social connections and social groups being formed. This year instead of having a teacher as the Dungeon Master (the person who leads the activity and creates the scenarios) we are pleased to see our student Matilda volunteer to lead the activity.

Arts & Crafts

On a Monday afternoon students can engage in several different arts and crafts activities. At PRC we are passionate about providing a safe and inclusive space for students to have a creative outlet where they can explore their individuality and express themselves freely. Some of the art activities include:

  • Jewellery making
  • Polymer clay
  • Knitting
  • Lego
  • Paining
  • Gem art
  • T shirt printing
  • Smile/soap/candle making
  • Crocheting

Whittlesea Community Art Project

The City of Whittlesea will be celebrating community, arts, and culture on the weekend of Sunday 17th March 2024.

Themed ‘Connections’ the 2024 Community festival will include theatre shows, music, food, community and craft stalls and an array of cultural and creative activities available indoors and in the beautiful grounds around PRACC.

The theme Connections invites us to think about how we are all connected to our families, community and to the environment. We are all interconnected.

This year, in the Eucalypt room at PRACC, Black Hole theatre will be presenting “Someone in the dark”, an interactive children’s show that explores the overcoming of fears and emerging from the warmth of the nest to the outside world.

For this year’s art project, Plenty River College are helping to create an environment that connects this show to the outside world and the rest of the festival. Students have been busy on a Tuesday afternoons, making silhouette animals and paper plate animals to display at the festival. Please go along to the free festival and have a look at our students’ wonderful artwork.
