Spotlight on the Curriculum: Diving into Legal Studies and Geography

As our academic year progresses, our students across various stages are deeply engrossed in their subjects, unraveling the complexities of the world through theoretical understanding and practical application. This week, we take a closer look at what our Year 11 Legal Studies students and our Year 7/8 and Years 9/10 Geography students are exploring in their classes.

Year 11 Legal Studies: Basic Legal Concepts of the  Australian Legal System

Our Year 11 Legal Studies cohort is currently immersed in the fascinating world of law with their study on "Basic Legal Concepts and Sources of Australian Law". This segment of their course is designed to equip students with a foundational understanding of the legal system in Australia, tracing its origins and examining its current structures and processes. Here's what they've been learning:

  • Defining Law: Students have been engaging in discussions and activities to understand what law is and how it differs from mere customs or societal norms.
  • Understanding Legal Fundamentals: The distinction between customs, rules, laws, values, and ethics has been a focal point, helping students appreciate the complexity of legal principles.
  • Exploring Key Legal Principles: Through case studies and analysis, students have delved into procedural fairness and the rule of law, gaining insights into their importance in a democratic society.
  • Examining Legal Structures: The course has covered the origins of common law, the hierarchy, and jurisdiction of state and federal courts, shedding light on how laws are applied and enforced.
  • Legislative Process and Powers: Students have explored the role and structure of parliament, the legislative process, and the concept of delegated legislation, alongside understanding the division and separation of powers.

This comprehensive approach not only aids students in grasping the basics of the legal system but also prepares them for more complex studies in their legal education journey.

Geography: Understanding Our World

Stage 4 Geography (Years 7 & 8): Landscapes and Landforms

Our Stage 4 Geography students are on a journey through the diverse landscapes and landforms of our planet. They are exploring the fundamental question, "Why is there a diversity of landscapes and landforms on Earth?" This exploration covers several key areas:

  • Understanding Landscapes and Landforms: Students learn the difference between landscapes and landforms, delving into why these natural formations are considered important.
  • Processes Shaping Our World: The focus here is on the natural processes that shape landscapes and landforms, from erosion and sedimentation to volcanic activity and tectonic movements.

Stage 5 Geography (Years 9 & 10): Environmental Change and Management

In Stage 5 Geography, our students are tackling the pressing issues of environmental change and management. So far this term, they've delved into a range of topics:

  • Exploring Environments: What constitutes an environment and how do these environments function?
  • Lithospheric Processes: Investigating the Earth's lithosphere and the processes that form and transform our environments.

Geography Skills Enhancement

A unique addition to our Geography curriculum is the daily "Mystery Country" challenge. Students use their investigative skills to identify a mystery country each day, integrating their findings into a comprehensive Google Earth project. This engaging activity not only enhances their geographical knowledge but also hones their research and technological skills.

Conclusion

Through the rigorous study of Legal Studies and Geography, our students are developing a deep understanding of the Australia’s legal system and geographical wonders, developing a robust framework of knowledge and skills. These subjects not only enrich their academic knowledge but also prepare them for informed citizenship and future careers. Stay tuned for more updates from these fascinating explorations in our next newsletters!

The History Classroom

Students in Stage 5 have been working hard in History over the course of this term on their current topic of Popular Culture. This topic covers each decade starting with the end of World War Two up to now and explores what was popular in each decade and the movements and trends which defined it.

Recently the classes have been working on collages of the Fads and Fashions seen in the 1950s. Through their research students discovered the popularity of the Poodle Skirt, Hoola Hoops and the Bullet Bra among other things.

These collages now decorate the History classroom, adding colour to the space. Take a look at our handiwork.

Students in Year 8 have also been adding to the History Classroom while exploring the roles of Historians and Archaeologists. During a recent lesson students were tasked with creating a job listing for both a Historian and an Archaeologist. To create their job listings students had to research the roles of both professions, their salaries and where the jobs are available.

Students were not impressed with the salaries of Historians and Archaeologists. They did discover that Historians can work in a wide variety of environments including on TV Shows.

Show Team

Last Saturday our secondary students from the show cattle team took part in the Boorowa Show cattle section. The students have spent countless lunch times over at the ag plot getting our new steers Cloudy and Winston ready for the show.  With only two weeks to get prepared it has been a huge commitment and effort. Congratulations needs to be extended to all members of the team for their efforts to get us there. Winston received a 3rd and Cloudy a 2nd in the steer classes. In the Parading classes Meghann and Taheesha also won places in their classes.

As this was Boorowa Central Schools first cattle show, Murrumburrah High were generous enough to lend us a few of their steers to enter in the Novice Parader competition. We were very thankful for this opportunity and thank Murrumburrah High for helping us out. This day was a great experience, and we look forward to the next show as well as developing our skills.
