Level 4: Connect
Important Notice:
- Tuesday 19th March: Excursion to Scienceworks - Stay tuned for more details via Compass.
- Parents, please nominate yourself to your child's teacher, via their student diary, if you would like to be a Classroom Representative this year. Thank you.
Daily Reminders:
- School diaries - This is the most direct method of communication with your child's teacher and will be checked by the teacher daily. Parents can also send an email to the school email which will be forwarded to your child's teacher.
- Hats - At SEPS we strongly encourage students to adopt 'Sun Smart' practices. Sun Smart students protect themselves by bringing to school and wearing their hats at recess, lunch and for any activities that are outside. Students without hats will play in the sheltered areas of the yard.
- Homework- As you would be aware, homework was distributed last Monday. It will be due back next Wednesday, 6th March. The expectation is that students will complete their homework matrix activities in addition to daily reading and their assigned Mathletics tasks. Thanks in advance for your assistance with this.
- Laptops- Our expectation is that students bring along a charged laptop to school every day. Please note that students are unable to charge their laptops at school due to OHS concerns. Lately, we have had a number of students presenting with no charge/low charge laptops which makes it difficult for them to fully access some lessons.

Literacy:
Over the next fortnight, we will be continuing on developing students' narrative writing techniques as well as the reading skills of summarising and questioning. As always, the text will be in the form of high quality picture story books and our class serial. We have also begun to read some wonderful texts on Epic Reading!
Most of our literacy sessions have also included a grammar & punctuation component. We have been working on understanding and using exciting punctuation such as speech marks, commas, apostrophes and exclamation marks. We have been learning about the accurate use of punctuation and capital letters and incorporating these into our writing. It's been great to see the students so keen to learn and develop these skills.
This fortnight in Spelling we will be continuing to look suffixes and the range of rules which may alter the base word. For example 'change the y to i' before adding the suffix merry+ment becomes merriment. We will continue to explore a range of suffixes which alter the meaning of a word and practise using these in a variety of contexts.
Maths:
Students are continuing to solidify their understanding of place value, which involves comprehending the value of a digit. Specifically, they are focusing on renaming, learning about the various ways a number can be represented. With these skills and strategies, students will progress to addition and subtraction, working with 3, 4, and 5-digit numbers. They will enhance their fluency in partitioning and decomposing numbers during addition and subtraction.
To improve their number sense, students will engage in short and efficient warm-up activities focused on building fluency with numbers, such as Numble and Hit it.
Furthermore, students now have Mathletics activities assigned to them covering place value for homework, further supporting their learning at home.
Inquiry:
The past few weeks we have been exploring how our interactions, relationships, and environments influence our health and wellbeing. Students have been learning about how our emotions and reactions can change based on the environment and people we are interacting with, and then setting strategies of healthy, helping ways we can support our emotions. The students have been investigating how we can encourage healthy behaviours in the classroom and school yard and have been busy working on posters that promote wellbeing strategies.
What's been happening?
Literacy:
Over the past two weeks in literacy, students have delved into the writing technique known as "show don't tell." Through explicit instruction and exploration of our class text 'Kensuke's Kingdom' as well as their own novels, they've learned how to vividly describe scenes, emotions, and character traits without explicitly stating them. By incorporating descriptive language, sensory details, and actions, students have engaged their readers' imagination and fostered a deeper connection to their writing. Through practice and feedback, they've honed their ability to craft rich and immersive narratives, becoming more expressive and compelling storytellers.
Have a great fortnight everyone. See you back here, same time, same place in two weeks' time!
