Learning Centre News...

Learning Centre One

How is it that we have come so far already in the Term? The preps are settling well into school life and are embracing the school core values of Respect, Resilience and Responsibility.

In English, the students have began exploring some of the high frequency words and how we can use them in our writing. Students started to use some high frequency words that they’ve identified while reading shared texts. The students continued exploring concepts about print, with the elements we use while we read. In phonics the students continued to learn new sounds of O/C/K/CK/E/U/R. You can ask your child if they can identify the sound and name of the letters they’ve been exploring for some extra practice!

During Maths, the students have been learning about patterns and how they can copy, continue or create their own pattern with a range of objects or drawings. They then looked at how they can create a 3 part movement pattern for example, clap, jump, stomp. They then continued to explore 4 part movement and object patterns. The students then began exploring the concept of time by looking at what their daily schedule looks like and the order in which different events happen in our day. They then explored how they can say and order the days of the week.

In Religion, the students have been unpacking the Our Father prayer and what it means. Students drew pictures that connected to each section of the prayer and what they believed connected to them. Students then began to explore the season of Lent, and that it is an important part in the liturgical calendar. They then deep dived into project compassion and how we can help others in need.

Buddy time:

The preps have been engaging in buddy time with their year 5 buddies. They have been getting to know one another by engaging in a range of activities together. This has been happening every fortnight. It has been great seeing the year 5’s be such caring role models to the preps.

Learning Centre Two

We would like to begin by acknowledging our award recipients at the whole school assembly in week 5. Congratulations to Aiden, Kang, Jake, Harry, Sophia, Saatvika and Sabrina. Well done to Ateng who was chosen as our Aussie of the Month recipient.

LITERACY

Our Graeme Base author study continues for the next few weeks and we are looking forward to reading a final book of his, The Legend of the Golden Snail. Students made predictions and then adjusted these as we looked carefully at the clues inside the front cover.

Students were presented with the words 'Grand Enchanter' from within the book and were asked to visualise what they thought this person might look like. They sketched their visualisations and then described their enchanter using noun groups.

We have also been having fun investigating collective nouns. We read this book by Jennifer Cousins and then researched some others to compile a class list. Some of the really interesting collective nouns we found were an ostentation of peacocks, a mischief of mice, and an armada of newts.

MATHS

In Maths, we have been focusing on prime, composite, square and triangular numbers. Students were able to use concrete materials to visually represent these numbers and draw their findings in their books. This week we are beginning to look at multiplication and the different strategies that we can use to solve our problems.

RELIGION

In Religion, we have been rewriting psalms, using modern-day language and our own interpretations. Once the psalm had been rewritten, students created an artwork with their piece of writing. This week, we will be listening to the story of Abraham and Isaac and the Easter story, reflecting on why Jesus sacrificed His life for us.

BISHOP MARTIN'S VISIT

Last week, after our whole school liturgy, Bishop Martin Ashe spent some time with the 5/6 students answering their many questions about his life, interests and vocation. It was a very insightful time and we all learned a lot about what it is like in the life of a bishop.

PREP BUDDIES

Our year five students were very excited to meet their prep buddies last week. The preps received their buddy bear from their year five buddy and we have been getting to know our buddies by helping them to fill in our buddy booklet. We can't wait to see the year fives teach our preps the core values and be role models for them. The buddy sessions seem to be the highlight of our fortnights, we can't wait to see the preps again in week 8.

Learning Centre Three

Another great week in Learning Centre 3!

We began week 5 with a whole school assembly which recognised some amazing work by all. A special shoutout to Alannah Pal, Jayden Osamuyi, Lily Mills, Miguel Fabia, Sukhnoor Singh, Yar Mayom, Arlo O’Rourke and Tashvik Bawa who were all award winners on the day!

In Literacy, we are continuing to explore a different range of books where we are particularly practicing our understanding of the Concepts of Print. Literacy rotations are in full swing where students participate in activities focusing on comprehension, text related activities, independent/group reading, writing and phonics.

In Maths, we have been learning about Time, in particular durations of time. On Thursday the 29th of February, it was Leap Day! Students participated in a Leap Day mathematics activity that focused on the day itself and what the day will look like in 4 years time – “How old will I be in 4 years?”, “What grade will I be, in 4 years?”.

During inquiry, we have been working on “ideating” our favourite toy, meaning, how can we make our favourite toy better than what it is!

In Religion we have been looking at the different types of prayer – Lenten Prayers, Prayer of Sorrow, Prayer of Forgiveness. Furthermore, we have been learning about Lent and what it means to us all.

We were lucky enough to be visited by Bishop Martin, who held a Liturgy on Friday the 1st of March. Bishop Martin had the opportunity to take a school tour and spend some time with both staff and students.

We have had a very busy, yet very fun week with the Year 1/2s.

Learning Centre Four

Greetings from LC4. What a busy couple of weeks we have had.

Literacy

Over the last fortnight in Literacy, the 3/4 students have been learning how to understand and respond to different stories.  This included using their comprehension and visualisation skills. Students responded by drawing, verbalising, writing and role playing different scenarios. We also explored the importance of rules and expectations and how they are important to maintain an orderly and safe community.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we explored ways to talk about addition and subtraction and how we can use alternative strategies to solve different problems. We were lucky enough to experience a leap year so we talked about the importance of this and how our calendars looked different. Each student was given a “leap frog” which turned into a competition to see whose frog leapt the furthest.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, we are learning about civics and citizenship and the different levels of parliament. We explored what it means to live in a democratic society and what rights we have. We researched how our local governments function and what services they provide us.

Religion

In Religion, we looked at forgiveness and how God calls us to be forgiving people. Students reflected on the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation in their lives and the community.  After learning about the Prodigal Son through Godly play and reflections, students identified the different stages of forgiveness. We were honored to attend a liturgy by Bishop Martin and spend time with him in LC4. We continue to learn about the different Sacraments.
