Stage 1

A message from Stage 1

Welcome to Stage 1, 2024! It's been wonderful getting to know our students and discovering their strengths over the past few weeks. The students have seamlessly integrated into their classes, and it's heartening to see them already cultivating positive learning habits. Creating a nurturing and inviting atmosphere is essential for the wellbeing and academic success of our students. We are thrilled that students are settling in well and embracing positive learning practices early in the school year.

English

We are learning to:

  • revise the letters and phonemes we learned last year
  • spell tricky words
  • read and spell four- and five-letter words
  • use new vocabulary words
  • structure a simple sentence correctly

We are successful when we:

  • put phonemes together to read new words
  • sound out and write the phonemes in four- and five-letter words
  • use new vocabulary in a sentence
  • use a capital letter and boundary punctuation when writing simple sentences
  • identify the subject and verb in my own and others writing

Maths

We are learning to:

  • apply an understanding of place value and the role of zero to read, write and order two-digit numbers
  • collect, interpret and represent data
  • collect and record data using tally marks

We are successful when we can:

  • count in groups of ten
  • represent two-digit numbers using concrete materials
  • find the nearest ten to a given number
  • record tally marks in groups of five
  • represent data using pictures and objects

Integrated Studies

This term, students will be getting their hands dirty as we investigate ways to reduce, reuse and recycle to adopt more sustainable practices, both at school and at home. If students have gardening gloves at home, could they please bring them to school as soon as possible as we will need them for our investigation (sturdy rubber gloves would be a good alternative).

We are learning what it means to ‘leave a light footprint’ on the environment so that we can help sustain our earth.
