Music & Performing Arts

Graeme Stewart

Hello There Park Ridge Families,

It’s already Week 6 of Term 1 and our students are off to a flying start in Music & Performing Arts this year. Similarly to last year our Year 5 and 6 students have been learning the basics of the acoustic guitar, however, unlike last year we have been focusing on chords and chord progressions rather than melodies. It’s been fantastic seeing the students engaged in their learning and displaying the school values of Resilience and High Expectations as they take on the challenge of learning to play the acoustic guitar.

The Year 3 and 4 students have been learning to play the ukulele and like the senior students, they have also focused on playing chords and chord progressions instead of basic melodies. Once the Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students can competently play enough chords, they can begin to learn songs using the skills they have developed on ukulele and guitar.

Our Year 1 and 2 students have been revising and developing their knowledge of the fundamental musical concepts of beat, rhythm, tempo and dynamics using a variety of percussion instruments to practise and play several rhythmic ostinatos and online exercises. The fabulous Foundation students have settled into their routines and have been exploring several musical concepts using their voice, body and a variety of percussion instruments.

The Senior Choir had their first performance for the year at assembly in Week 4, singing the national anthem, the school song, and a wonderful rendition of ‘I Am Australian’. They’re looking forward to some more performances at assembly throughout the year and are developing a short set of songs to perform at the school’s Open Night in Term 2. The Junior Choir have been rehearsing with the Year 1 students and we shall be inviting any Foundation students who wish to join the Junior Choir in a few weeks’ time.

Stay tuned for more Music & Performing Arts news updates throughout the year.
