CELEBRATING OUR COMMUNITY - Family Focus

The Abdi Family

Thank you to Mohamed Abdi for telling us a little about how things are special and different in his household during Ramadan.

Q: Who are your sisters or brothers who go to this school?

Sabirin, Hanan, Ayub

Q: Do you have any younger siblings?

Yes, Amila. She is 2.

Q: What is something that is different or special about the Ramadan time of year for you and your family?

We fast to remember how hard it is for the poor people. We don’t have to start fasting until we are 15. People my age can choose to practise fasting by doing it a few days a week when we are younger. At the moment I’m fasting on the weekends.

Before the sun rises we have to eat anything we want to eat for the day. While the sun is up we can’t eat and when the sun goes down we can eat again. We usually have quite a big feast each night after dark.

If you are sick or pregnant you don’t have to fast.

Q: Do you do anything special during Ramadan?

Every night when we start eating - we eat first and then we go to a masjid – anywhere that does a Tarawih.

Q: What happens at the end of Ramadan?

After the last day of Ramadan, a three-day festival is held. It’s called Eid ul Fitr. Families and friends gather together to celebrate. They sometimes decorate homes with lights and exchange gifts. We might go to a play centre with our cousins or to Highpoint to the underground floor to the cinemas or timezone etc.

Thank you again to the Abdi family for sharing some of their traditions of Ramadan and Eid.
