Food glorious Food

As we jingle merrily towards the end of the year with class parties, celebrations, and graduations this is a gentle reminder to the Malvern Primary School Community that in every year level there are children who have anaphylaxis/ allergic reactions to foods. Whilst the children are fantastic at being responsible for their own food choices

Mistakes happen.

All it takes is one mis-labelled plate of food, an overly excited distracted child, the sharing of food with friends, and BOOM……. full blown medical episode.

So as a community how can we assist in ensuring that every child in every year level has the most amazing end of year celebrations with their class mates whilst keeping everyone food safe ?

  1. Remind your child/children not to share food with their friends and explain why? Knowledge is power.
  2. If purchasing party food, have a quick glance to check what the ingredients are and maybe swap it for a food allergy friendly, or if you are baking please ensure that the ingredients used are clearly labelled.
  3. Educate  Educate Educate: Did you know that Australia has one of the highest incidences of food allergy in the world and this is increasing at an alarming rate; in fact, the country has seen a 7% year on year increase in food allergy fatalities over the last 15 years, and 1 in every 10 babies born in Australia will develop a food allergy.

With no known cure for food allergy, awareness and education is our strongest defence.

It’s important that we are  aware of food allergies, know the signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction and know how to respond in an emergency. Would you know what to do?

A huge thank you from the allergy/anaphylactic kids and the school for your help. Have a great day.
