Junior School Sport

Summer sport came back with a bang this week with a number of Loreto teams taking the field.

AFLW

We have a new team this term with a Loreto Year 3/4 AFLW team entered for the first time.

The girls had their first game on Wednesday afternoon against Seymour.

We were first in for the ball right from the start and demonstrated a fearless attack on the football throughout. After a succession of points opened proceedings, we soon found our kicking boots and started slotting them from everywhere. April goaled, then Sibella, then Isabelle. April again.

We took some great marks and were handling the windy conditions well. Charlotte, the smiling assassin, tackled with particular relish which caught our opposition by surprise. Evie, the youngest player in our team, was too sick to go to school on Wednesday but much to her delight recovered just in time to play football in the afternoon. Some kids would describe that as the perfect day! To cap things off she slotted a brilliant goal from a tight angle. Zali was unselfish with the ball and it was pleasing to see all the girls share the ball around. April finished with 3 goals, narrowly pipping Charlotte and Isabelle for the 3 Brownlow votes.

There are no premiership tables in this age group with winning/losing and even keeping score taking a back seat to fun, teamwork and development. However… as soon as the final siren blew the girls were very quick to tell me we’d won by 34 points, 7.4 (46) to 2.0 (12). They’d been keeping close track! It’s good that football is helping them take such a keen interest in maths.

We had a couple of players away sick and Seymour generously donated some sub players to us each quarter, underlining the spirit in which these games are played.

Looking forward to a great term!

Our Year 6s made it 2 wins from 2 matches. A narrow win over Pembroke in Week 1 was followed by a rollicking win over Pulteney in Week 2, 8.6 (54) to 3.1 (19). Zoe Alp and Grace Cornish were everywhere, working tirelessly across the field. Alannah-Rose Minicozzi was at the bottom of every pack and Matilda Van Deventer provided a focal point up forward.

Our Year 5s had a tough start against the Wilderness Year 6s but we got on the scoreboard and kept working hard right up until the final siren.

Friday Night Netball

Loreto has two brand new Year 2 netball teams starting this summer with Loreto Gold and Loreto Blue taking the court in the Friday Night Netta competition.

Coaches Julia and Tennille have been putting the teams through their paces at training, introducing them to the rules of the game and working on their skills and teamwork.

Teaching the concept of thirds and where each position can/cannot go is in itself a challenge. In the gym the white netball court lines can get lost among the black basketball court lines… and the green badminton court lines… and the red little volleyball court lines… and the blue big volleyball court lines.

By far the best part of training has been learning the team cheer, which they have been belting out with gusto in preparation for matches.

Friday’s Round 1 match finally arrived and it’s fair to say that the excitement levels were through the roof. As match time neared though, a few girls became a little nervous about taking the court at all. Some girls needed a bit of coaxing to hop in the car and again to get out of the car. Once they got there though and saw their friends, everything settled down. Pleasingly everyone took to the court and all had a great time.

At this level it is not necessarily about winning or losing… but after our teams scored 7-0 and 6-0 victories, the girls may not share that view!

Now that they have a taste for winning, keeping the enthusiasm to a manageable level will be a challenge for the coaches. Tennille: “ The lid has well and truly been blown off.”

Well done girls, on taking the first step in your Loreto netball journey!

Spirit of the Game

Our Year 4 Gold netball team were a player down on Friday. Our opponents, East Adelaide, very kindly offered to give us a player each quarter. Their fill-ins played brilliantly for us in what ended up being a very tight match.

It was a lovely gesture by East Adelaide and the game was played in terrific spirits. There may be occasions when we have an extra player or two and our opposition are short. I would love to see Loreto lend players to the opposition to help them field a full team if the situation was reversed. Ultimately, the more time our girls can get on the playing court, the better it is for their development. Plus, it is a good way to build relationships with other schools.

On the match itself… Sofia and Valentina were excellent in their debut games, Maria loved the chance to run around in centre, Scarlett showed poise both at GA and GD and captain Yashi worked tirelessly despite an early tumble. Inez started in defence but was thrown into GS/GA for the last half. She started popping in goal after goal and suddenly our hard work was being rewarded. With scores level deep in the fourth quarter, Inez sank another one to put us in front and the girls held on for the win! Song volume: Loud.

Other sports

This week our Loreto Diggers volleyball team gets their season underway as does our brand new Year 2/3/4 cricket team! The cricketers head up to Kensington Cricket Club to take on Norwood Primary in the Saturday morning competition.

I hope everyone has a great term of sport!
