Classroom News
We hope you enjoy reading the news from our Early Childhood and Primary classes.
Kindergarten
Our Kindergarten explorers are wrapping up their inquiry unit with lots of enthusiasm! After the delight of making their own bread and butter, the children are now turning their curious eyes toward our little garden, where they will observe the herbs and vegetables we planted and explore fun, tasty ways to preserve them. Together, we will brainstorm different methods like pickling onions and beetroot, making herb pesto for freezing in ice‑cube trays and drying or freezing fresh herbs. It is a lovely way for our young learners to connect with nature, understand where food comes from and discover how to use their harvest long after it has been picked!
Pre-Primary
Fairy Town is a town designed and created by the Pre-Primary class as the final part of our inquiry into special places. We started our inquiry by identifying the features of Albany and the places that are special to us. We then decided what features were important to include in Fairy Town. These included shops, houses, parks, a library, Woolies, lifesaving facilities and an airport. Fairy Town even has its very own skyscraper and Fairy Queen Castle. Our next step was to design and make our Fairy Town places. Finally, we mapped out a town plan using a bird’s eye view and we chose locations with consideration of access to roads and proximity to other features. We think the fairies will love Fairy Town!
Year One
After the exciting planning of playground designs, the day had finally arrived to start turning their plans into 3D models! The Year One students experimented with different building shapes and structures and learnt that the A-frame was a great structure for building swings. They enthusiastically gathered their materials and carefully followed their plans to construct their models. The results have been amazing, with creativity flowing from these little minds. Come and have a look at the finished models as the class prepares to unveil them over the course of this week!
Year Two
The Year Two students were very excited to finally make their own Marvellous Mixtures on Monday. They had designed and planned their ingredients, predicted the scientific reactions and written a procedure for their recipe. There were a variety of ingredients ranging from flower petals, eggs, oil and bicarb soda, resulting in some pretty impressive concoctions. Special thanks to Mrs Poole for coming and setting up the Science Lab with all the equipment and staying around to help us out. When we got back to class, we had a great time discussing the density of each of our ingredients.
Year Four
The Year Four class has been looking closely at the language features and structure of a quest narrative in preparation for writing their own exciting quest story. They have found lots of examples of descriptive and figurative language and interesting verb groups in the class fantasy quest novel, Rowan of Rin, which they have really enjoyed reading. The class has also been enjoying the picture book, Voices in the Park, by Anthony Browne, while developing their visual grammar skills to analyse illustrations using vectors, position, salience, shadow and light. It has been very interesting to see how the author/illustrator uses text and illustrations to complement each other. In Technologies with Ms Field, students have been learning about food and fibres. Teaming up with Ms Diletti for Art, we have explored how paper is made and begun making our own out of fibres from GSG grown trees and scrap paper. We are in the midst of designing the best smoothie ever and inquiring into where the ingredients were grown in Australia and the technology required to get them from paddock to our blenders! Who will take out the win on Friday?
Year Five
This week in Year Five we have been getting to the cool end of our states of matter unit … literally. We made ice cream in case that pun did not give it away. The students worked in groups of three to produce vanilla ice cream using their muscles to shake, roll and churn their way to a delicious scoop. We housed our cream in a plastic bag inside another larger bag containing ice. The rest was simple science as we discovered adding salt to our ice dramatically reduced its freezing point, helping to make ice cream in less than three minutes!
