Year 4

Term 2 in Year 4!

Students have been developing their writing by learning how to structure clear and effective sentences. They are adding greater detail to their paragraphs and revising their work to include appropriate punctuation. It has been great to see their confidence grow within their writing as they create their own texts.

Throughout the term, we have been exploring two texts: The Firework Maker’s Daughter and His Name Was Walter. Students have been engaged in and shown great enthusiasm for both stories. They are making thoughtful predictions using evidence, summarising key points from previous lessons, and analysing the authors’ choices. We have been forming opinions about characters' traits and decisions, and learning how to structure written responses using full sentences supported by evidence from the text.

In Maths we started the term with a focus on multiplication and division, where students are using a variety of strategies to solve problems efficiently. Our Fractions unit has allowed students to explore equivalent fractions, compare and order fractions with different denominators, and represent fractions in shapes and collections. Students particularly enjoyed our Statistics unit where they developed survey questions to collect their own data sets.

In Wellbeing sessions, students have been learning about the “Ready to Learn” scale and discussing what to do if we’re not feeling ready to learn. Students are developing their ability to recognise the things that can make us feel dysregulated, then exploring practical strategies to help regulate their emotions. Together, we’ve created a class “Ready to Learn” plan to support a positive and focused learning environment.
