Human Society and Its Environment

This term, students across Years 7 to 10 have been engaged in a range of meaningful and challenging HSIE activities, each designed to build knowledge, develop skills, and foster deeper curiosity about the world around them.
Year 7 History
Year 7 History students have recently begun their study of Ancient China. This unit introduces them to key features of early Chinese civilisation, including beliefs, governance, burial practices, and cultural traditions. Students are learning how to examine archaeological evidence and sources, laying the groundwork for historical thinking and interpretation.
Year 8 HSIE
Year 8 HSIE students have participated in a collaborative Gallery Walk activity as part of their current unit. Rotating through a series of visual and written sources, students worked in groups to interpret material, record their ideas, and engage in thoughtful discussion. The notes and ideas gathered were then used to support extended writing tasks, giving students the chance to practise summarising information and structuring written responses. The activity has not only strengthened critical thinking and analytical skills, but also supported literacy development through a focus on clear, purposeful communication.
Year 9 Geography
Year 9 Geography has concluded its unit on Sustainable Biomes. Students explored how biomes are used and managed, particularly in relation to food production and global sustainability. Through case studies and source analysis, they examined the impacts of human activity on natural systems and considered the complex balance between economic growth and environmental responsibility.
Year 10 Geography
Year 10 Geography has completed its work on Environmental Change and Management, with a focus on coastal ecosystems. Students investigated both natural processes and human impacts on coastlines, including erosion, habitat loss, and pollution. They analysed local and global examples of coastal management, considering the effectiveness of different strategies and the importance of long term sustainability.
Across all year levels, students have been encouraged to think critically, engage in meaningful discussion, and apply their learning in purposeful ways. It has been a strong term for HSIE, with students demonstrating growth in both knowledge and skills.
