Year 9 Visual Arts – Sculpting with Spirit and Story

This semester, our talented Year 9 Visual Arts students have been immersed in the world of sculpture through a hands-on introduction to 3D artmaking. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Aurukun camp dog sculptures by Aboriginal artist  Lex  Namponan and Lin Onus, students explored themes of culture, storytelling, and individuality.

Using cardboard, newspaper, papier-mâché, and plaster bandage, students carefully constructed their own dog sculptures. This process not only developed their construction skills but also deepened their understanding of contemporary Indigenous art practices.

Adding a personal twist, students designed their own surface decoration, incorporating patterns, colours, and symbols that reflect their own interests and creativity. The results are a vibrant pack of unique dog sculptures that proudly showcase both technical skill and artistic voice.

Well done to Year 9 for their creativity, commitment, and thoughtful interpretations in this exciting unit.

These will be out on display at our annual Cabaret Night art exhibition, so make sure to check them out.
