Visual Arts Term 3 Overviews

VISUAL ART TERM 3 OVERVIEWS

Prep

Our Foundation students will make alien sculptures in Term 3, inspired by their avatars on "Class Dojo”. Term 3 is focused on modelling and construction of 3D objects. They will use a material called Magiclay, which has bright colours and a rich texture, nearly marshmallow-like, and has been chosen by our Visual Art team to capture the interest of our little leaners. This term, our focus is on improving fine motor skills, while understanding and exploring the sensory qualities of modelling; and learning how to work with integrity in the Visual Art space.

Year 1

The concept for Term 3 is Painting. Grade 1 students will learn about the categories of colours (primary, secondary, cool, and warm colours). They will explore and understand the correct use of brushes and water colours. Inspired by the artist Van Gogh and using the warm colour palette, students will create a watercolour composition- sunflowers as an outcome of their learning from the term.

Year 2

In Term 3, our Grade 2 students are making a clay name plate. Students will explore the Elements of Art shape, form and texture; while learning properties of clay, practicing fundamental hand-building techniques, and creating their own unique clay masterpieces. They will refine their fine-motor skills and creativity while learning about First Peoples artists and creative project design.

Year 3

Throughout Term 3 students will experiment with a variety of water colour techniques. Students will create a sample of each technique and be encouraged to use these in a series of water colour paintings throughout the term. They will learn about colour theory and how to care for the equipment they use. They will experiment with combining additional materials to create different effects.

Year4

Students will learn about the properties of clay at different stages. They will practice some skills using Playdough before moving on to working with clay. Students will learn how to correctly join two pieces of clay using a 4-step method, (score, slip, stick, smooth). They will experiment with clay tools using both the additive and subtractive techniques and use these skills to create a moving artwork.

Year 5

In Term 3, Grade 5 is working on the theme Textiles. Students will be learning about different types of hand-stitching methods, including running stitch, cross-stitch, French knot, and chain stitch. They will learn about different embroidery artists like Jerome Speekman and Anne Brooke, and their ways of working, to be able to independently create a final hand embroidery piece to consolidate their learning.

Year

6

Students will learn how to use clay in various ways incorporating the additive and subtractive techniques. Students will practice hand-building techniques to reacquaint themselves with techniques taught last year as well as using a variety of tools to embellish their work.

They will design their own Coat of Arms incorporating aspects of their identity and personality. Students will label their design to note which technique they are using in certain areas of their sculpture.

Once fired, students will have the opportunity to glaze their work, ready for display.
