Mandarin Term 3 Overviews

Year Level | Term 3 |
Prep | In term 3, Grade Prep students are going to explore the topic of family members in Chinese. Such as ba ba (dad) , ma ma (mum) and siblings in Chinese. Students will also explore the familiar tones learnt from previous terms and understand basic comprehension of Chinese character. |
Grade 1 | In term 3, Grade 1 students will be introduced to the vocabulary for like and dislike as well as the sentence structures for "What fruit is this? This is... (fruit name)." Students will learn that in Chinese language we put "不" (bù) in front of a verb to negate a verb. They are also going to explore that in Mandarin the structure of a simple sentence is different from that of a simple question. Students are going to participate in interactive activities such as worksheets, multiple exposures, crafts and singing in the Mandarin class. |
Grade 2 | In Term 3, Grade 2 students are going to learn different seasons words in Chinese and explore the difference between the seasons from China and Australia. Student will also learn simple sentences to describe the seasons such as "xia tian hen re" Summer is very hot and more. |
Grade 3 | In Term 3, Grade 3 students are exploring how to ask others about how they physically feel (Nǐ hái hǎo ma?) as well as to express some symptoms of common illnesses, using different adjectives such as tòng (painful/ hurt). In this unit, students learn to use both simple "noun+adjective" and "subject+verb" sentences. Students will continue to learn to speak Chinese by using Pinyin. They will also be exposed to knowledge of Chinese radicals so they can identify Chinese characters effectively. |
Grade 4 | In term 3, Grade 4 students will explore the topic of hobbies and leisure activities through engaging conversations and vocabulary development. They will learn to talk about sports, music, movies, and games, as well as describe what they enjoy doing in their free time using phrases like “I enjoy…” and “On the weekend I…”. Students will practise inviting someone to do something and responding appropriately. Key vocabulary will include different words for common hobbies and sports such as swimming, soccer, playing guitar, dancing, watching films, and more. Through role-plays, dialogues, and written tasks, students will build confidence in expressing personal interests and weekend activities in Mandarin, supporting both speaking and listening skills. |
Grade 5 | In term 3, Grade 5 students are learning to order from the school canteen menu, it is important to know how to order food, understand the menu, and be aware of dining etiquette, which varies between cultures. Students will learn to order different serve of food, and as well as telling the price of the food items. Students also understand that some of the food items are borrowed from English and translate it into Chinese words but the sound is similar to English. Throughout the term students learns to order food and knowing basic phrases and food vocabulary, understanding cultural dining etiquette, and being able to communicate food portions. This knowledge helps ensure a respectful and enjoyable learning experience using simple sentences orally. |
Grade 6 | In term 3, Grade 6 will learn how to engage in a simple shopping conversation in Mandarin Chinese. Through role-plays and dialogues, they will practise asking for help, describing preferences, asking about prices, and making purchases. Key vocabulary includes colours, phone case types, prices, and payment methods. Students will also explore cultural norms around polite bargaining and customer service in Chinese-speaking communities. By the end of the term, students will be able to confidently take part in a basic shopping interaction in Mandarin. |
