Year 6 Term 3 Overviews

Term 3 Overview - Year 6

Term 3 is here, and we’re already off to a strong start. The Year 6 team looks forward to another term of deep learning, critical thinking, and hands-on experiences. As always, thank you for the continued encouragement and support you offer your child – it helps keep them engaged and growing.

Reading

In Reading this term, our focus shifts to close reading of non-fiction texts. Students will dive into information reports, news articles, and explanation texts, looking closely at how authors present facts, shape meaning, and position the reader. We'll ask: Why has the author included this? What do they want us to think or feel?

These skills will support students in identifying key information, recognising bias or perspective, and strengthening their ability to read with a critical eye – skills they’ll carry into their writing.

Writing

This term, our Writing focuses on Information texts – unpacking how and why things happen through clear cause-and-effect language. Students will also use these skills to write scientific reports as part of our Inquiry learning, documenting their experiments and findings using formal structures. This term is about writing with precision and purpose – making complex ideas easier for others to understand, and communicating confidently using technical language.

Numeracy

This term in Maths, we’ll explore operations with fractions, decimals and percentages – including estimating, adding, subtracting, and calculating discounts. Students will also investigate multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of 10, using reasoning and estimation to check their work.

We’ll be working across multiple strands, including:

  • Mapping (plotting points and describing movement on the Cartesian plane)
  • Chance and Data (describing probabilities and analysing real-world data)
  • And making strong links between Numeracy and our science-based Inquiry investigations.

Inquiry - The Power of What We Can’t See

Our Inquiry unit this term invites students to explore the invisible forces that shape our world. Students will investigate how unseen scientific principles impact our everyday lives and the more expansive universe, from gravity and magnetism to planetary motion and celestial systems.

We’ll ask questions like:

  • What makes objects fall?
  • Why do we have day and night?
  • How does gravity affect life on Earth and in space?

Students will assume the role of scientists, designing and conducting their own fair tests, analysing their results, and sharing their findings through scientific reports. This unit will stretch their thinking and creativity while helping them make sense of the unseen phenomena that govern our world.

SEL - Resilience & Teamwork

In Social and Emotional Learning, we’ll continue to build on the themes of resilience, empathy, and teamwork. Students will explore what it means to bounce back from setbacks, contribute positively to a group, and take on leadership roles. There will be opportunities to practise gratitude, reflect on their team contributions, and work collaboratively in ways that stretch their thinking and build self-awareness.

General Reminders

  • Please ensure your child wears runners on PE days.
  • Check Compass and Google Classroom regularly. These are our leading communication platforms.
  • If your child is away for an extended period (such as a holiday), please inform the school and leadership team in advance.

Homework

Students are expected to read for 30–60 minutes each night, followed by reflection or response questions that help them dig deeper into their book.
