Year 4 Term 3 Overviews

Nǐ hǎo (hello) Year 4 Families!

Womenjeka (Welcome) back to school for Term 3 in 2025! The Year 4 students have transitioned successfully back into learning routines.

We would like to commend all Year 4 students on their achievements last semester.

Curriculum:

Literacy

In Reading, students will explore a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, examining their purpose, structure, and key features. They will compare and contrast themes and ideas, building their ability to analyse why authors make specific choices and how these influence the reader. They will deepen their understanding of texts through summarising, inferring, analysing, and critiquing.

In Writing, students will begin with a focus on Poetry, where students will explore a variety of poetic forms and practise adding description using a mix of sentence types, adverbs, verbs, and adjectives. Following this, students will move into Information Reports, researching key facts, using Tier 3 vocabulary, and following the writing process of planning, drafting, editing, and publishing. They will refine their work through self and peer feedback while continuing to develop skills in the 6+1 Writing Traits, with a focus on Ideas, Organisation, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Voice.

Spelling, grammar, punctuation, and presentation will remain a strong focus. As part of our Literacy program, students will continue SMART Spelling and handwriting practice through homework and morning routines, strengthening their spelling patterns and handwriting skills as they work towards their pen licence.

Numeracy

This term, Year 4 students will continue making connections through rich problem solving tasks across all the strands in Mathematics. Students will continue participating in Number Sense Workshops, where they will participate in various number fluency games to develop their fluency in multiplicative thinking. In addition, they will use mathematical modelling to solve practical problems that involve multiplicative thinking.

We will be exploring equivalent fractions and using visual representations to show the connection between fractions and decimals. Students will solve problems involving the duration of time including situations involving ‘am’ and ‘pm’ and conversions between units of time. They will also interpret grid reference systems using grid references and directions to locate and describe positions and pathways.

SEL

This term in SEL, Year 4 students will continue exploring Respectful Relationships, Berry Street and consolidating our knowledge with the school values and SWPBS (School wide positive behaviours). They will utilise a ready to learn scale, to ensure they are ready to learn and identify strategies to support them in stressful and challenging situations. They will identify their interests, passions and strengths and explain how it forms their identity. Furthermore, students will explore the effects of positive and negative gender norms and share how we can respect people’s differences.

Inquiry

During our unit of inquiry this term, students will be developing a greater understanding of the concept of sustainability by exploring, comparing and contrasting the traditional sustainable practices of three Indigenous groups. Students will hone their researching and note-taking skills while learning about the land use and management practices of indigenous groups such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Maori and Inuit communities. Students will make connections between the sustainable use of resources by the indigenous groups and themselves, considering how we can apply this learning to the modern environment. By the end of the unit, students will be able to identify ways in which they can be more sustainable in their own lives and have a greater appreciation for traditional practices.

Ways to Help Your Child At Home:

Home Reading - We encourage your child to continue reading each night and answer some comprehension questions that a family member asks them. We ask students to record the title, date and a comment in the green reading journal themselves. Take home books are for enjoyment and for your child to practise their reading strategies, and are not meant to be a challenging task for your child. In addition to the Home Reading program, Wushka is extremely valuable resources to help your child practise their reading.

IXL- IXL is a great online resource for both Literacy and Numeracy skills, where students can practice at home. From a diagnostic assessment completed at school, students are given carefully selected tasks and activities suited directly to the level where they are at. Students can use what they have learnt at school and revise/practice this same skill at home on IXL!

Maths Games - To practice our multiplicative thinking, students can play maths games at home. You can find a range of games on the Love Maths website - https://www.lovemaths.me/ - or ask your child to teach you a game that they play in their number sense workshops.

We look forward to continuing working and building relationships with both you and your child this year. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns. After school is best for a quick chat, otherwise send your child’s teacher an email to set up an appointment time for a longer chat.
