Year One

Communicating with the Year One Team

We are very happy to be partnering with you in 2025, and welcome your input:

When communicating with the Year One team, please reach out via the below email addresses. Your child's class teacher is your first point of contact when requiring a discussion. You will usually see us outside the classrooms at the end of the day. This is the preferred time to catch us for a quick chat as we are focused on greeting the students before school.

Please also note that we have scheduled meetings at 3.45pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Year One Teachers:

Ms Zoe Bates (Class 1A) Zoe.Bates@education.vic.gov.au

Mrs. Julie Hall (Class 1B) Julie.Hall@education.vic.gov.au

Numeracy - Term Two 2025

This term in Maths, students learnt about one to one correspondence that is needed to collect data. They created tally graphs and used the data collected to make picture graphs. By doing this, students were exposed to the ‘x’ and ‘y’ axis of graphs in preparation for further exploration in year two.

Students then learnt about patterns using shapes. They identified various ways to sort a collection of objects according to their colour, shape, size or special attribute. By being able to sort objects into sets, students were then able to create patterns that had a ‘repeating core’. This may have looked like a basic AB pattern, an ABB pattern, a AAB pattern and so on and so forth. By beginning to expose students to patterns using shapes, they are demonstrating an emerging awareness of simple algebra by making links between objects and letters.

Looking for repeating cores and using shapes and objects then created the building blocks for transferring learning into numbers. In Year One, students focused on number patterns involving the skip counting sequence of two, five and ten. The links made from the repeating core transferred over into number patterns when bridging numbers.

Students had the opportunity to pick the most appropriate uniform informal unit to measure a variety of things to figure out the length of each object and they were exposed to addition and subtraction using basic problem solving strategies for equations up to 20.

Two Dimensional shapes were another focus for our Year One learners. They built upon their basic shape knowledge and learnt the names of new shape families such as polygons, quadrilaterals and trapezoids. Year One students classified newly learnt shapes by categorising their features using maths language such as ‘sides’ and ‘vertices’. Activities linked to this unit included monster shapes, a shape hunt, spin and cover and drawing of shapes.

Learners revisited duration of time where they became more familiar with the units of time ‘seconds’, ‘minutes’, ‘hours’, ‘days’, ‘weeks’, and ‘months’. They made links between these units of time and the calendar months in a year and how the seasons play a role in elapsing the days in a whole year.

Thankyou for your continued support of our students throughout the first half of the year. Enjoy your Winter holidays!!!

We're looking forward to a fantastic Term Three!
