Level 3 & 4

Our Grade 3 and 4 students had a wonderful time exploring the Melbourne Museum on our excursion last week. We want to extend a huge thank you to our parent volunteers, your supervision and support made the day run smoothly. It was fantastic to see the children so engaged with the exhibits and learning together outside the classroom.
We are carrying this positive energy into our school week and look forward to more great learning ahead!
CURRICULUM
Literacy
Spelling
We have wrapped up our learning about all things Silent Final E (SFE), and we’re moving into new territory. That’s right, we’re talking about the ‘i not the end’ rule! You will hear plenty about it in the upcoming weeks as we learn about all its iterations and uses.
Reading
Our mentor text this week is a ‘Little People, Big Dreams’ biography on Eddie Mabo. This We are using a Due to the short weeks and excursion, we will continue looking at the song lyrics to ‘I Am Australian’. We will find connections to what we have already learned within the lyrics and will compare and contrast with ‘We Are Australian’ and similar text that is told from an indigenous perspective.
Writing
In Writing, we will look at the structure, language and purpose of biographies. This will complete and share our Acknowledgements of Country. We will take the time to look for similarities and differences in wording, topic and sentence structure to help strengthen our own writing.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:
- ask your child to identify words in the books they’re reading that have SFE rules in them
- speak to your child about what is special about being Australian.
Maths
Grade 3
In Mathematics, our Grade 3 students will continue exploring fractions. This will expand the concept of fractions to identifying halves, thirds, fifths and tenths of shapes/objects and of groups.
Grade 4
Students in Grade 4 will continue to focus on 2D Shape. They will shift to the concept of symmetry by exploring identifying symmetry in shapes and completing symmetrical shapes, before creating symmetrical shapes and patterns.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:
- encourage your child to find symmetry in their bedroom, house and local surroundings
- encourage students to practice their times tables. Try saying your times tables out loud, writing them down, or asking someone to quiz you. There is also Multiverse on Mathletics that can be a fun interactive way to practice.
CBL (Challenge Based Learning)
In Week 9 our Challenge Based Learning will continue to focus on the guiding questions,‘How has colonisation impacted First Nation Peoples connection to Country (land, culture and language)?’ We will be learning about Pemulwuy and Bennelong and using their experiences as a base for comparing the experiences of the Aboriginal people and British people at those times.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT HOME:
- speak with your child about seeing things from different points of view – sibling/friend/family misunderstandings make great examples!
Wellbeing
SWBPS
In response to what we are seeing in our classrooms, we will be focusing on taking responsibility for and showing respect for property. This will include personal, borrowed and school owned belongings. We are seeing a lack of care being taken with property at school and would love to see an improvement in this area.
Respectful Relationships
We will be focusing on problem solving. Students will identify different actions someone could take to solve a problem and identify possible consequences
of actions used to solve a problem.
