Grade Twos have been practising their learnt tricky words to make sure they know them and can transfer them from their spelling lessons to different writing tasks across the curriculum.  They are revising the sounds /oy/, /oi/ and /ph/ and are about to begin to learn how to correctly spell words with the sound /ear/, /eer/.  Grade Twos have been introduced to the comprehension strategy of visualising and have revised the parts of speech they have learnt so far this year.  Their picture story book lessons have been based on the text, “Turtle’s Song” and children now know what the words pound, shatter and feast mean.

In Mathematics, Grade Prep children have been learning about numbers to 20.  Some of their work has been matching numbers and collections to 20, identifying one more for numbers to 20, counting numbers on a number track and comparing and ordering numbers to 20.

Gr 1

In their Mathematics lessons, Grade One children are completing a measurement unit on length and mass.  They are making indirect comparisons of length and mass as well as ordering and comparing different lengths and masses.

Gr 2

In Mathematics, the Grade Two children have completed a Place Value assessment and have started a new measurement topic on length.  The children are learning to use universal informal measurements of length to measure a variety of objects in the classroom.  They are estimating and then measuring different lengths using objects such as paperclips, footsteps, blocks, etc.

In Literacy, students are learning how to how to write a narrative story for the NAIDOC story writing competition. Students have been looking at many Dreamtime stories to help them navigate and write their own. The Title of their story will be ‘LAST NAIDOC’ and the story must be about ‘Last NAIDOC at my school the weirdest thing happened at my school.’ This competition is a NAIDOC Week School Celebrations which are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

In Mathematics, the grade 3 students are comparing and ordering 4-digit numbers. By using base-10 blocks to compare four-digit numbers, use the symbols for ‘greater than’ and less than and ordering numbers on a number line.  Students are also representing multiplication and division facts for 2,5 and 10 using arrays and applying multiplication and division to solve problems.

The grade 4 students are learning to classify 2D shapes by calculating the number of straight sides, curved sides or vertices and criteria.

In Science, students are beginning a new topic titled ‘Colour.’ Students are learning to describe how light travels from light sources. Children will learn to identify what a light source is, explain how light travels in straight lines and light spreads out from a light source until it hits something,

In Humanities, the students have completed the unit Journey Around Australia. As part of their learning, they chose their favourite state and researched its key places and facts, explaining why it is special to them.

Gr 5 and 6

The Grade 6 students have been learning about decimals, and have this week moved into learning about probability.

In Literacy, the Grade 5 students have started reading their new book called ‘Waves’. Waves is a narrative non-fiction book about the waves of migration to the shores of Australia. Every journey is perilous, every situation heartbreaking. Every refugee is a person forced by famine or war or fear to leave their home, their families, their friends and all they know. Our Grade 6 students have been reading our new book called ‘Free Diving’ by Lorrae Coffin. This picture book that tells the story of Australia's Aboriginal pearl divers, who dived into the ocean without any modern diving equipment. The story is a lyrical narrative. While reading this, students will be completing a book report in writing time.
