SRC Update

Over the past few weeks, our Student Representative Council (SRC) students have met to provide their voice and feedback on a range of school initiatives. One exciting project currently underway is the development of several murals around our school in collaboration with Bayley Mifsud, a proud Peek Whurrong woman and renowned Aboriginal artist.
As part of this process, our SRC students met to discuss what they would like the murals to represent so that the artwork is meaningful and reflective of our school community. Students shared that St Joseph’s is a place where people are 'friendly, respectful, helpful and encouraging' and spoke about the importance of our values of Strength and Kindliness, as well as our STAR values, being represented through the artwork.
Students identified many places that help them feel connected to our school, including the church, classrooms, prayer tables, friendship tree and chess tables. They also discussed the importance of acknowledging and celebrating Aboriginal culture, recognising the deep connection First Nations peoples have to the land and the stories that are shared through art.
This exciting project has been generously funded by our Parents and Friends Association (P&F), and we extend our sincere thanks for their support. Through their fundraising efforts and commitment to enriching our school life, the P&F has made it possible four school to have Aboriginal artwork on the walls of our school buildings. These murals will provide meaningful representation throughout our school, celebrating our values, culture, environment and the diverse stories that make St Joseph’s such a special place.
The SRC also suggested incorporating elements that reflect our local environment and community, including Bunjil the Eagle, the Yarra River, gum trees, native animals and colours that represent both our school and the natural world around us.
We are incredibly proud of the thoughtful contributions our SRC students have made throughout this process. We look forward to sharing the finished murals with our community and seeing these important stories, values and connections brought to life through Bayley’s artwork.
