Grade 3
To finish off our unit on Heat, Grade 3 students celebrated their learnings by cooking pizza! Through this experience students were able to see heat transfer in action! Heat travels through the metal tray into the pizza (conduction).
Hot air moves around the oven thanks to a fan (convection) and heat waves (radiation) from the oven element travel to the pizza without touching it. We also saw the importance of a metal tray being used as a conductor.
Grade 5
The Grade 5's have been learning about how light can be manipulated and this fortnight, completed their handmade kaleidoscopes. Students learnt how a kaleidoscope works, by using light and reflective mirrors, to create beautiful symmetrical patterns.
Grade 6
To finish off our Solutions unit, the Grade 6s have designed and created the ultimate ice-cream float whilst explaining the science behind it. Their ice-cream float needed to contain a chemical reaction, a soluble, an insoluble, a solute and a solvent.
From our creations, students learnt that not everything mixes the same way in a liquid. Some matter dissolved, some floated, some sank, some expanded and some solutions react chemically. This was evident in our carbon dioxide foam!
Calling all creative kids — it’s time to unleash your inner Water Hero!
We'd love as many of our young scientists to take part in the 2026 National Water Week poster competition. This year’s theme is Water Heroes Make Every Drop Count, and we can’t wait to see your imaginative, colourful and inspiring creations.
You need to design and upload a poster that celebrates this year’s theme. Entries close 5pm, Friday 11 September, so get those pencils, paints and ideas flowing. You can enter with your parent at home through the website: Coliban Water’s 2026 National Water Week Competition page or drop of your poster with your name, age and class into the Science Room for submission.
