Year 6

This week, our Year 6 students took part in National Reconciliation Week through an “All In” activity. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on how we can contribute to reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

Since the beginning of the term, Year 6 students have been exploring mentor texts connected to themes of identity, belonging, empathy and understanding. One group has been reading Dirrarn, exploring themes of culture, Country, identity and connection, helping to deepen their understanding of First Nations perspectives and the importance of listening to and learning from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices. Another group has been studying Once, reflecting on themes of empathy, injustice, resilience and the importance of standing up for others in times of prejudice and conflict.

Building on this learning, students reflected on what reconciliation means to them and how they can actively show respect, understanding and connection in our community. Each student chose a personal statement about what they are all in for, including themes of respect, kindness, listening, truth-telling or standing together. They traced their hands and arms, wrote their statements, and combined their pieces to create a collaborative display.

The completed display is a powerful reminder that reconciliation belongs to all of us, and that through learning, reflection and action, we can all play a part in building a more respectful and united future.

Inquiry

This term, our Year 6 students have been learning about natural disasters, with a particular focus on cyclones and floods. Through science, geography and STEAM learning experiences, students have explored how and why these events occur, the impacts they can have on communities and environments, and the ways people can prepare for and respond to them. Students have investigated real-world strategies used by engineers, scientists and governments to reduce risk and keep communities safe.

To enrich their learning, students participated in the Mad About Science Natural Disasters Incursion. Through engaging demonstrations and hands-on activities, students explored the powerful forces behind natural disasters and gained a deeper understanding of the science that shapes our world. The incursion provided an exciting opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world applications and sparked plenty of curiosity and discussion.
