English

Term 4 has, once again, been both a significant and rewarding one in the English space. A huge congratulations to our graduating class of 2025. You should be immensely proud of your efforts—not only this year, but across your six years at BHS. All the best for what awaits you in 2026 and beyond. A very sincere thank you also to our Year 12 teachers of English, Literature, English Language, and EAL. Your passion, expertise and unwavering commitment to your students is deeply appreciated.
As we look ahead to 2026, there is much to be excited about. Several new and refreshed curriculum offerings will be introduced across the year levels, including the return of Book Club in Year 7, a Netflix Adaptation unit in Year 8, a genre study of Speculative Fiction in Year 9, and the introduction of Shirley Jackson’s seminal Gothic novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle in Year 10.
Building on the success of the new Year 7 debating unit and the continued dedication of our debating club—facilitated by Mrs Giangiulio—2026 will also see the introduction of a BHS Inter-House Debating Competition. This exciting new initiative will provide both junior and senior students with opportunities to develop their public speaking and debating skills while representing their house in friendly competition against their peers. More information will be shared early in the new year about how you can get involved.
Finally, an enormous thank you to all members of the English faculty for your tireless work and unwavering commitment to your students throughout the year.
To our students and families, thank you for your ongoing support of the English program. We wish you happy holidays, and if you’re looking for some summer reading, remember that the BHS Digital Library is your one-stop shop!
Have a safe, relaxing, and well-earned summer break.
