Art Open Classroom - Pottery Exhibition

This week, the grade 1-6 students have put their final touches on their pottery pieces. We hope you were able to make it to our Pottery Exhibition today!

Prep

Last week we learnt about the weaving practices of First Nations people. This week we have been learning about a new tradition in another part of the world.

Ojos de Dios are a popular Southwest holiday tradition that have roots from indigenous practices in Mexico.  Ojos de Dios were first made by Wixárika, who are also known as Huichol, an indigenous group in Mexico, during the 15th century. They considered them good luck and used them as a form of protection.

The Huichol people have strong connections to the land, which is why their spiritual beliefs are also aligned with nature and the earth. The four ends of the Ojos de Dios represent water, fire, air and earth.

Students found two sticks that they could use to create their own woven piece.

They taped them together and then completed the weaving technique. They were very excited as they started t witness the diamond forming. This was not an easy task for many Prep students who are still learning what their hands can do, but they persisted and felt very proud to finish.

Staff Clay Club

Last week, much to the student's dismay, Art Club was for staff only. Staff were invited to the Art Room to create a clay sculpture. There were many laughs and incredible work was produced. Thank you to the wonderful and talented staff members who came along and had a go!

Catia (4C)

Catia loves to draw and uses a lot of her spare time doing so. She loves realism but also loves to draw cartoons. She has taught herself to draw through lots of persistence and practise. She is most proud an eye that she made using digital art techniques. Her advice to other students who would like to improve their art skills is, "always try to use grid lines (it makes a big difference) and don't listen to the haters!"
