Year 12 Personal Development Skills Community Project
The Year 12 students in the VCE VM program at Nazareth College were tasked with creating a community fundraising project to collaborate and network with a charity of their choosing.
The Aboriginal Literacy Foundation (ALF) was the charity l chose to fundraise for as it creates greater community awareness of the importance of working together to provide literacy materials to Indigenous children in order to close the gap between Indigenous and Non-indigenous young people in remote areas.
The way l went about raising money for this charity was hosting a sausage sizzle at lunch over two events where the students at Nazareth College were able to buy a sausage for $2 on Friday 5 and Wednesday 17 September.
Magnets and posters were also provided and delivered to me from the ALF to sell and promote more awareness within the Nazareth College community that we as a society need to focus on building the Literacy skills of our indigenous children so that they can have the opportunities in life that we have.
The fundraising event was inundated by hungry students on the Friday, and the sausages were quickly sold out. Following this, we decided to hold another sausage sizzle on the Wednesday, where we sold 300 more sausages, resulting in another sellout!
Approximately $1150 including personal donations was raised, a result that I am proud of being the driving force.
I would like to thank both staff and students for their support of this worthy community project. In particular, the support of Year 12 students Josh Smith, Matthew Kallis, Anesti Kalaitzis, and Maintenance Staff, Renee and Tom, this project was a real example of teamwork.
Finally, these funds can be used by the ALF to expand their programs. E.g.
- Distance Education Programs – Providing books to remote and regional schools (NT)
- Aspire Girls Program – personal mentoring program for young indigenous girls
- Health Living book series – books designed to explore themes related to healthy and happy lifestyles set in the Australian Outback using Aboriginal characters. (Phonics method).
On a personal note, it was quick and simple to contact the ALF over the phone and staff were very easy and friendly to work with.
They expressed their gratitude that through my project initiative, Nazareth College supported their important goals.
