Foundation: Castle and Sun 🏰 ☀️

Experimenting with geometric shapes, students collaged painted paper to build a castle, inspired by Paul Klee’s Castle and Sun artwork☀️

Year 1: Abstract Faces

After looking at examples of cubism and abstract art, particularly the faces by Pablo Picasso, Year 1 students designed and constructed abstract faces from recycled cardboard.

They painted their faces and added patterns and details using paint pens. Fantastic!

Year 2: Pop Art Sunrises

Inspired by the artwork Sunrise (1965) by American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, students illustrated a sunrise/sunset artwork. They included a foreground, middle ground and background in their artworks and used inks to add colour. Finally, they applied ‘benday dots’ that the artist was famous for using a plastic stencil and coloured markers.

Year 3: Cubism Musical Instruments 🎹 🎸🥁

After looking at the samples of cubism artworks (particularly by Pablo Picasso), Y3 students chose a musical instrument to illustrate. They then “chopped up” the artwork into shapes which they filled by collaging paper, colouring with textas and painting with watercolours.
