Miss Bríd Claffey

Swimming

Well done to Harry, James, Chloe and Bianca who competed in the Sydney Swimming Championships on Monday 25th March 2024.  All of the students did our school very proud in their individual heats competing against students from Catholic schools all across Sydney.

Sydney Roosters League Tag Gala Day

Stage 2 took part in the Sydney Roosters League Tag Gala Day this week.

All students in Year 3 and Year 4 gave it a go and got to try something new. It was a great day where the children learned new skills and created new relationships with other school students. Well done all for participating!

SAVE THE DATE

Our Athletics Carnival will be taking place on Tuesday the 28th of May at Hensley Field. More information will be sent out via Compass in Week 1 of Term 2.

Fitness

In a recent workshop with my fellow sport teachers from the surrounding schools, we learned about the importance of incorporating the element of fitness into the children's daily lives. As little as seven minutes per day practising physical fitness can greatly improve a child's fundamental movement skills.

What is Fitness?

  • an ability to perform daily activities with vigour
  • to a demonstrate traits and capacities that are associated with a low risk of premature development of lifestyle diseases associated with physical inactivity.
  • physical fitness, and the behaviours that build it, can reduce risk of illness, lead to enhanced cognitive functioning and can enhance one’s ability to participate in leisure, often a satisfying social experience.

What are the benefits?

Children and young people who are active on a daily basis are;

  • at lower risk of conditions including overweight and obesity, Type II diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
  • more likely to have a higher level of aerobic fitness and bone health and experience positive mental and cognitive health benefits.
  • are likely to achieve greater academic success and maintain higher attention levels during class at school.
  • more likely to meet the recommended amounts of daily physical activity for health and wellbeing now and in the future.

Thank You!

It has been a fantastic term for Sport and I would like to thank all staff and parents who have supported me in the role of Teacher in Charge of Sport.  I am looking forward to all of the wonderful sporting events in the coming term.  It is great to see the enthusiasm among the students and effort the children put in their lesson on Mondays and I am getting great feedback from teachers about their Friday lessons.

I will be taking leave for the first two weeks of Term 2 and Miss Sarah Buxton will be taking my place until I return on the 13th of May. I look forward to seeing you all then!
