Term Two 2024 - 6A, 6B & 5/6C
Hello Grade 6 Families and Friends and welcome to the first Connect for the term!
I trust you all had a wonderful Easter and at least were able to have a couple of days off to spend with the family.
We have been very impressed with how well the Grade 6's have settled back into school. Normally it takes a couple of days to get back into routine, but they have hit the ground running and are making the most of every learning opportunity, which is pleasing to see.
CAMP!
Our Grade 6 Camp is on Monday 27th May at Waratah Beach Camp. Please return the medical forms as soon as you can, if you haven't done so already. I've been on too many school camps in my time as a teacher and I can honestly say that this one is one of the best. The experiences and confidence that your child will benefit from is invaluable. Please check out their website....
HOUSE ATHLETICS
House Athletics took place at Ballam Park and were an outstanding success thanks to the amazing efforts of Mr. Jackson. He really is an amazing asset to this school and an incredible role model to all of the students. He promotes a healthy mix of competition with good sportsmanship and I'm sure that many of our students will play sport at community level with this attitude for many years to come.
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM!
Maths
For the first couple of weeks this term we are looking at identifying patterns in number. This skill is the forerunner for using Algebra which is a life skill that will come in very handy if they want to work with spreadsheets and, or run their own business. The better you understand Algebra and the more proficient you are at using it will help you make a profit!
Literacy
We are still doing amazingly well with our reading in small groups. 6B have finished their first novel and have started reading their second one. It is very impressive to see the students increase their fluency and confidence at reading aloud. The accompanying tasks that they have completed have increased their depth of understanding.
And The Princess Bride! It's reaching the finishing line, but I can't see just how Westley and Buttercup are going to end up together! It will be such a shame if they don't because after all, it's true love! We'll have to wait and see. Please ask what's been happening in the book, as it is important that your children can paraphrase information....(which, incidentally is what we are working on with our writing!
Paraphrasing information is such an important skill because when the students move through secondary school and are required to do assignments they need to be able to research information and put it into their own words.
Until next time we Connect, all the very best from 6A, 6B and 5/6 C!
