Class News from Year 5

The Year 5 class has settled into the new year well, embracing new learning opportunities, Aquatics, Sports Day, presenting class worship and NAPLAN, to name just a few.

As part of our core value Serve, the Year 5s presented a play called ‘Tina the Tree’, to the Seniors at Seeds Church. Some of you may have seen this play at our class worship recently. The play is based on Psalm 1. The river is like the word of God, which sustains the tree. Like Tina, we need refreshing so that we are strong enough to serve others.

We have been learning a variety of art techniques this term; sketching, shadowing, water colour, radial symmetry and paper sculpture.

The Year 5s have also been gaining a greater understanding of The Australian Colonies. Students were allocated a colony and then made a list of questions they wanted to research about their location. They presented their investigations on a slide show for the class to learn from. Here are a couple of examples.

Sports Day has also been a highlight for our Year 5s. It was a warm one but we had lots of fun!

Premier's Reading Challenge

Mrs Spencer is super excited to share with you that the Premier's Reading Challenge has commenced for 2024.

You will see some posters promoting the Premier's Reading Challenge around the school and teachers will provide students with a recording sheet. Some teachers may prefer to have the students leave the recording sheets at school so the books read during school time can be recorded. If you wish to also have a recording sheet at home, please ask, or just make a note of the books read and your child can record them when they get to school.

It’s another fabulous year to read so check out our Campus Library, your local Council Library, your own bookshelves, or even a Street Library for something that captures your imagination.

You have plenty of time to record your reading, from now until the middle of Term 3.

Please do not hesitate to contact your class teacher or myself if you have any queries.

Oliphant Science Awards Diary Reminder

Please write a note in your diaries for Friday 10 May. This is the deadline for the return of Entry Forms (and Risk Assessments for models) following payment on the Qkr! app (please indicate this at the top of the Entry Form).

The sooner I get the forms back, the more time I can spend with those students entering the competition and clarifying questions.

Remember to remind your child to get a form if they need a replacement or have decided to enter - I can hand them out personally during Science lessons on Fridays, or they can come to my classroom any day to collect one.
