Welcome to Term 2! I hope you managed to get some sun and rest over the break. As the cooler months set in and the days get shorter, I decided this would be the perfect term for the students from years 3 – 6 to learn about Space! We have closed the blinds and I asked the students to decorate the Science room with anything that reminds them about space, or anything they like to draw. The room is starting to look really great, I love the effort some of them put into this task!
Earth and Space Science is a really topic for the students to have a bit more ownership over their learning and lends itself to being a project-based term. The grade 5/6s are learning about how Earth is part of a system of planets that orbit around the sun. The grade 3/4s are learning about the importance of Earth rotating on its axis, to cause day and night. After a class discussion about what each of those statements mean, I put a challenge out to the students to think of a “what if?” question relating to their relevant learning. After collecting their questions, I designed a project for them to work on for the term.
They will have the chance to show off not only their research skills, but also their creativity in their presentation.
If they want to bring some resources from home, they are more than welcome, but they should not go out and buy anything. We would very much appreciate any of the following items donated for the projects: shoe boxes or any other sort of box, coat hangers, newspapers or anything else that could be recycled into a space project.
