Preschool News

Recently we were fortunate to have a visit from artist Jasmine. She has been working on the Aboriginal mural at the front of the building. The children greeted her with the Dharawal way to say hello, Nagangbi. Jasmine showed the children her mural and asked the children to find various symbols. We found symbols that were painted by the 2023 preschoolers. We said good-bye to Jasmine as she set about the final touches of the mural. Next, we plan to create a book with the current preschool children on the symbols in this mural.

At preschool we link our sustainable practices to our promise in our Acknowledgment of Country. The children in both groups are starting to learn our preschool version by reciting it each day. During our play times, routines and intentional teaching we discuss ways that we can look after the land. Recently we have been discussing how keeping the sand in the sandpit helps to look after the land. We discuss how composting and feeding chickens our scraps helps to look after the land too. The child are also starting to know which bin is the recycling bin however the skill of sorting waste does take some time to fully develop.

Last week Gurawara honoured their promise by participating in Clean Up Australia Day with our buddy class. We discussed the world map and where Australia is on the map. We looked at the AIATSIS map of Australia too. Everyone prepared for our buddies to visit by going over safety expectations, putting on gloves and lining up the bins. The children did a wonderful job at collecting paper, rubbish and weeds. Thanks to the children's hard work the garden is looking very tidy!
