An Overview of the Term

Writing

This term we are focusing on Informative writing; learning how to write newspaper articles and biographies. So far, the students have explored the essential elements in a newspaper article, including a catchy headline and factual information to inform the reader. Students have enjoyed creating engaging headlines and writing about recent events.

Later this term, the students will learn how to write biographies, and will write a biography on a famous Australian. They will then present this biography to the class; practicing their public speaking skills.

This topic of study will integrate with our Inquiry unit; in which we are learning what life was like for Aboriginal Australian before European settlement. In this unit, the students will write a biography about an Aboriginal Australian, and will then present this to the class.

Reading

This term, we are reading the hilarious and engaging (and stinky) Mr Stink by David Walliams.

"Chloe is just about the loneliest girl in the world. She meets Mr Stink, the local tramp. Yes, he smells a bit - but he's the only person who's ever been nice to her. So when Mr Stink need a place to stay, Chloe decides to hide him in the garden shed!"

As well as reading Mr Stink, the students are practicing the comprehension strategies we have learnt this year by reading many engaging and interesting texts including some Aboriginal dreamtime stories. We have enjoyed reading "How The Birds Got Their Feathers", "How The Kangaroos Got Their Tails" and others, and discussing the difference between the moral and main idea.

Mathematics

We have jumped into the world of fractions, decimals and money this term! Our students are learning that these topics aren't really that scary, and instead involve lots of chocolate bars (ask them to show you!). The students have learnt how to draw and represent fractions, the difference between mixed and improper fractions, and how to find equivalent fractions. We are beginning to learn the relationship between fractions and decimals, and later this term will explore money.

Electives

Our students have thoroughly enjoyed participating in electives over the last two terms, and are looking forward to choosing new electives for Term Four!

Camp

Camp is fast approaching! Please make sure you have read the packing list (located under the resources tab in the Compass event) and your child has had a practice sleep over.  If your child/ren will require medicaiton at any point throughout camp, a medication permission form must be filled out and handed in to Mrs Rowe on the morning of camp with the medication in a labeled clear resealable bag.

Reminders

It is an expectation in Grade Three and Four, that students are reading for 20 minutes each night and recording their reading into their diary. Students can choose how they read: independently, to an adult, to a sibling, or even to a teddy or pet.

We are focusing on learning our times tables, and last term each student came home with a laminated times table chart. It is expected that students are practicing their times tables at home each night.
